skud inland

wow, i just got off the beach on my lunch break and man was that fun. it is high tide right now so i couldnt board or buggy but it is blowing 15-20 west so i took a skud run. now i am getting ready to move inland for the winter, where i will mainly fly in fields.

now to my question, i have only done, well any sort of power kiting on the sand how much diff is a grass field?

can you still get the long (skud) slides like you can the beach? cause i can get a good 20-30 feet out of one kite loop.

Grass is more slippery than sand... so yeah... lots more scudding potential. I have scudded (if you count butt-scudding) for over 100 yards and only stopped beacause the field was running out, and my seat was getting too hot from rubbing against the ground.

You have to make sure you don't have a lot of traction though on your shoes. If you have like work boots(obviously) it is WAY hard to skud. I have some old skate shoes that i wear and they work perfect. It all depends on how wet the grass is, if it's completely dry then you need shoes with little traction, if it's wet you can get away with some traction on your shoes :P

In the sand ,I found I have that much more control as your heels are being dug in.
On the grass...its sorta like bumber skiing (if you know what that is...lol) your feet are pretty much flat on the grass with less control.

I scud on a soccer field, and when i plan on skudding I wear my hightop converse, they are worn down, and have NO grip.

I have an old set of Adidas that are completely smooth on the bottom. They work great. Almost too good on wet grass !
Lack of tread makes a huge differense on sod.

Expect your winds to be a lot more unstable inland ! That JoJo will be a bit tougher to fly. Your Manta will shine !

i prefer to scud on my arse on grass tbh, grass is much more dangerous for standing up scudding if the wind is considerable as if you get ripped into a super man you hit the deck and not sand.
I want to try an old plastic snow sled for it as i get friction burns on my bum and my trousers stain up which is embarrassing on your arse.

I use some old biking shorts that have ass pads in them, and I also tie a polyester shirt around my waist to improve sliding ( i mostly ass scud on the grass ) if the field is wet like in the morning then I use a skateboard with some crisco spray on the bottom ( fast as all hell ) but it does suck when you get supermanned, which is why i dont foot scud much on the field. a plastic saucer shaped winter sled works well also.

buggy riding on the grass you will have much more drag than the hard pack sand. You will probably have to size up your kite a couple meters per the same winds to make up for the drag.
