Hi all, I'm new here and I bet you haven't heard this one before...


I've got an inflatable dinghy I use for fishing. It's got an outboard motor but it's noisy with the underwater exhaust and I'd like to be able to pull a lure (a small imitation fish for those who don't know) along at a maximum of 4.5mph silently in winds of 5-12mph.

Would it be possible to do using a small power kite and if so would it be possible to recover one quickly if I hook a fish? Any recommendations on size/brand etc?

for someone who 's fished using a inflatable dinghy and has also flown kites thats going to be a real chore to fly the kite and and fish at the same time. when you get a fish on you'll have to think that the kite has to be landed sometimes they dont want to just fall out the sky ,so I could see you losing more than u catch. also if your winds change more than you expect one kite might not do.
but if your really interest a closed cell depower or an inflatiable could work but i can see you getting way to frustrated and picking up kite flying instead cause you'll be mostly flying

The sled parafoil looks interesting-cheers Weldngod. Would that mean I'd only be able to go directly downwind though? The inflatable gets blown sideways a lot.

Deezpanshes, if there were two of us in the dinghy would it be feasable with a closed cell depower or inflatable? I'm assuming a 2 line kite will give me significantly more control over direction of pull than a single line (but I know nothing about kites!)

If you get one w/ 2 keels,you can adjust,by shortening one side or the other. This will make it tack more to one side there by pulling you more to one side or other. I bought 2 fishing delta kites from Hi-fly kites in south africa. They have double keels and adjustable bridal to do the same thing ,but I use it to carry baits offshore . You fly them on what is called a kiterod w/ a baitcaster reel on it.

how about a 10m venom (peter lynn)

it wont be too powerful if flown in light winds and has the added advantage of having auto zenith. this means when you take your hands off the bar it will sit at 12 oclock. it is water re launchable in case you do drop it in the drink. you can also anchor it. just depower the kite then attatch the chicken loop to a solid object and it will sit there. (this is not recommended for extended periods of time and needs to be watched but will let you move around the boat abit)

I have used mine to pull my dink before but i would not suggest this to someone until they have alot of time under one. I used the motor to power upwind to my sailboat. I then tied the dink and kite off to the boat and went down below to watch tv till the wind came up enough to go kitesurfing. (45 min.) . I then loaded my board into the dink and hooked into the kite and let it pull me to shore. Then kitesurfed back upwind to the boat. Hooked the 18m phantom up to the boat and took a redbull and cig break. It was tricky with a 47 ft mast., but the highlight of my yr being able to kitesurf out my back door.........................aj:tumble:

If you haven't flown kites before its going to be very frustrating trying to keep the boat going were you want it to I would find someone who flys and have them come with you the hopefully they have kites that would be suitable for water and see how it works before you buy anything. If it does, you'll have a better idea on what type of kite you need and wiether it will work for you. maybe a sail attachment might work.
