Speed records on ICE!
Last March one of our Kiters blew by at 55.5mpg with Skis on a frozen lake north of Pittsburgh while maintaining full control... after wiping out a
few times on the ice my self a few times I appreciate control. At what point does sailing only refer to movement on liquified H2O vs the frozen kind?

Thanks Fran. As anyone knows who has followed our sport, kites have been ruled out time and time again, especially on the water. Cory Roesler won
the Gorge downwinder year after year only to have them change the rules each year so he would be disqualified. So this is nothing new. I'm asking
Dave Culp to look in on this thread as he is probably the most informed of all the (water) speed racers here.
Meanwhile, take a look at these guys, they have what looks like the best chance at breaking the record in a boat.

Not to take anything away from the kite sailors by any means, may they get there first and stay there. None the less, it's an amazing feat doing
this on the water!

The record Fran is referring to is a wind-on-liquid-water record. It's run by the WSSRC (World Speed Sailing Record Council, a subsidiary of the
ISAF; Iternational Sailing Federation). The rules for this particular record specifically state "wind over liquid water" and nothing else. What we do
is called "land sailing".
There are other records which apply to us; NALSA (North American Land Sailing Association) runs and keeps records for land sailing. Most of these
records are higher than can be achieved with kites.
There are other "claiming" speed records, appropriate just for kites. IKA, PKA, several other groups keep such records. A record was set right at NABX
a couple of years ago, what something like 74 mph for a "stock (ie: non-streamlined) buggy?
ISAF first outlawed kites for their record (for various and stupid reasons, since rectified); now admit that 3 kitesailors are the 1st, 2nd and 3rd
fastest liquid-water sailing craft ever; faster than any boat, faster than any windsurfer. This is great news, as this record has never been held by a
kite-powered anything.
Cheers,
Dave
