Buggy History

Hey!

I bought this Flexi mk1 bug about a year ago from a guy in Tybee Island. We were boarding and he came out onto the beach dragging it without a kite. He told me that he had bought it used with a blade 4.9 and proceeded to turn it over in a crowd of people. He continued that he was terrified of it and that his mom wanted him to get rid of it. I offered him $100 and, eventually, he took the cash. Killer deal!

Anyway, this thing has been my best friend all year, has introduced me and many others to the joy of buggying and now, I'm kind of curious about its history. It has a sticker on the tube that comes down from the headstock to the seat that is the old Rockford Fosgate logo (a music equipment manufacturer). That is the only really distinctive thing on it. Everything else is stock except for the seat which someone once told me is an old Peter Lynn.

I can't get these links to work. There are two pics in the Kite Buggy gallery at the end. If anyone knows this bug or where it came from, I'd get a kick out of hearing some of its history.

That looks a lot like my buggy. Only my buggy has canted wheels ?

I have been told it was designed by Peter Lynn but made by Flexifoil ?????

Crazy light weight and pretty strong.

At $100 that was a great deal!

Flexifoil: 1.7m Sting, 4.9m Blade 3, 9m Blade 2.

Canted wheels, huh? My elbow grinds on the back wheels if I'm not cautious. Elbow pads are good...learned that the hardway! I wonder if the cant would make that better or worse? Where'd you get yours? Same seat?

I bet it would make the top of your wheels closer to you, but possibly inside your elbows. And it would look so FAST.

YUP,

The wheels are WAY close. I need long ( hockey ) elbow pads to protect myself from the rub !

I also think the weight isn't too well centered. Sitting too far back ?

I have a Peter Lynn after market seat on it. It hangs way too low and I bum out a lot! :o

I LOVE this buggy because it got me started in the sport. I only use it a couple of times a year now. If I was more serious about buggies I would upgrade!

There is a picture of me on it in the gallery.

That model buggy was my first, back in 1994. You are right, designed by PL for flexi. Be carefull of those welds on the back axle, they will start to crack. Best to have gusets welded to reinforce that angle.

I still have it, but I swapped the back axle with a friend for a later "version". I use this buggy as a tandem behind my PL monster. Have done 54mph with my girlfriend in the back at NABX, pulled by a 9m phantom.

Those are not original tires, as the original ones were not the wide variety. Score!

So...is this the original Flexi buggy? Could it really be over 14 years old? I thought those tires were aftermarket. I'll check the welds. I love this thing even if the geometry is a little funky. Thanks for the info. At what point does a kite buggy become an antique? :spin:

B 4 the P.L classic was.....

the land lizzard ... ...it has 2 ball joints that connected the down tube and front fork and if you weren't to hip on checking out the maintenance they {the ball joints} would break off or crack .....

case in point........

just when I'm digging on the new Morgan spring back support I just got.....

my lizards fork decided to depart from the down tube on the dry lake

sending me into a spastic run-run-run flip-flop thud maneuver{i'm fine} but... .. my buggy disappeared for a few seconds:puzzled:.... know were on the dry lake that is... until it came crashing down ,hurling from above after the down tube stabbed the lake bed and pole vaulted up and over me......
then grabs one of the line set for no reason... just to wad things up even more:wee:

:sniff: it was a long walk back to the van but I had a new comp buggy waiting for me to put together
