Hey All,

I've been modifying a old skateboard deck into what I want to describe as a "mudboard" for lack of a cooler name.

I've gotten past the footstraps (installed some small bungee straps) and I'm trying to figure out what to put on the bottom that would allow for holding an edge while in mud or combination of mud and snow.

It's of course for the spring, when the fields are too rocky for snowboards and too snowy/muddy for the landboard. Has anyone out there had any experience with this kind of contraption?

Right now I'm thinking either two 1" wide and 1/8-1/4" thick parallel rails on the bottom, one near each of the side edges, with flush screws into the base of the board from the bottom, or bolts and then filing to make them near flush.

My other idea was a sort of small sharp keel like a canoe has in the middle and maybe some small rail on each side to help edging when leaning.

Any ideas people have on reducing friction or learnings from building makeshift boards, or learnings from riding in mud and slush would be appreciated!

This weekend I'm going to work on it so I'll post my first build once it's complete. I will make my additions removable though so please do provide input!

probably best to put a metal plate of the same dimension topdeck and bolt them - one good slide in the mud and your likely to pull the screws right out - I seem to remember doing some downhill with a board like this and eating some dirt - don't see how a kite will make it better but I'd try it on a dare
maybe you want to try my minibuggy built from a tween's powerwheels - minus the handlebar - scary :wee:

i am currently using a home modified land board ! it has 9" tyres that are 4" wide ! can have a lot of fun on the grass in wet n muddy conditions with that !! well i say home mod !! it used to be a petrol engined skateboard ! but i cut the engine and mountings off and ime left with a 93" deck on steel trucks with 3" springs and fat wheels ! slightly heavy tho, but it can pick up some speed !! also capable of sideways action in the mud with good wind !

i meant to say 39" not 93" !!! that would be long !!:roll:

mogsie - I am also looking to turn a long board into a custom mountain board. What size trucks do you have on it and did you have to use risers? Where did you get the wheel/hub combo? can you post some pics?

I am thinking of using a Sector 9 Luke deck at 55"

alberta have you tyied this yet ? i tried it today with just the deck ! but found it was hard to get moving !! to much weight on a small area i think !!:dunno:
and when i eventualy did get moving the board kept shooting out from underneath me ! lading me on my ass !!
so i think my next plan is to purchase a piece of maple ply and cut my own deck somewhere between the size of a skateboard deck and a snowboard ! and fibreglass the underneath so i can sand it down to a smooth surface !
