Whats the Correct "Procedure"??

At my local spot when the wind is blowing NNW or just NW the winds seem a little unpredicable. Whatcha do when you set up for a jump and you go smoothly up and then BAM!!!:wee: a scary YANK and you kinda boost another couple feet straight up......should i just try to keep the kite overhead? or try to redirect? It happens so fast and i come down pretty hard. Really Scares the crap out of me for a min.

Usually when that happens. I get so shook up....and just pack it up and take out the single line googly eyed ocotpus....LOL don't laugh

See you have the same north wind issue as me. it comes over land and gets too lumpy to fly safely. I have pretty much given up on flying on a south location with a north wind during the winter months. I have had too many flights like you describe to feel safe in those conditions.

not to mention if I had to let go and my killers broke my kite is headed to Nantucket!

LOL Today, Not to mention the mentioned wind, My kite pulled so hard parked that it caught some wind underneath it and it started to flail all over the place. sooo hard that it ripped the kite stake outta the ground, Of course i make a mad dash for it, harness and all as it's heading towards the water lol. action packed sunday:moon:

That happened to me friday, I was done with the redirect and was expecting to go down cuz I was already to fall so the kite was just sitting above me. I got lofted a few more feet and looked up at the now idling kite and knew it "oh no..." so i dropped a bit harder than usual :P. I limped that night ;). I guess you keep redirecting if at all possible huh? no idea lol.

Tridude - do you mean to say that the arc will just bring you down without redirecting? Like, if it was at zenith and I jumped off a cliff (or a picnic table ; ) I'd just float down to the ground?

gravity will alwayz bring you back........................redirect is critical during a pend or transition jump regardless of what type of kite your flying..................DG mentioned the lift then yank up lift again scenario...........whatever the case, if you send it, you redirect it..........as for noticing the second lift, Ive never felt that on the arcs.........................wind direction, gusts, or clean, not a concern......just go fly it..............................

Thanks Tridude! Now it's just a matter of learning at what point in the sequence (which still escapes me) I should be at when I plan on my feet leaving the ground. Still haven't got all the steps in order or timed right.

go find you a blade or a Crossfire and start working it in some wind. That will get you dialed on the redirect and then it will be automatic with any other kite. A hundred jumps and it becomes instinct.

I heeded advice from a RK forum member about jumping with the land board...........treat it the same as a static jump....small tacks 15 to 20 feet holding the kite at 10 or 2 oclock...........send the kite back, lines tighten, bar in smoothly and jump..........redirect, float down, repeat, repeat, repeat.......... Eventually make your upwind and downwind tacks longer, bulid speed, hold that edge or grip as long as you can, send kite back, pop/lift off, redirect, float down...................................:duh::duh::bouncy:

That's smart thinking - probably helps keep the speeds down when starting out? The thing I'm wrestling with is when to jump and when to redirect. Any words of wisdom?

when the kite or lines pass in front of you (from 10 to 12 or 2 to 12), your in the powerzone, pull in and jump...............after a few minutes it will become more instinctive than reactive...........in no time you'll be popping some nice jumps.........................:duh::duh:

Looking forward to giving it a go - thanks for spelling it out a bit for me. Looks like we're warm & windy on Saturday. (13kts)

Hey Mac ,

I think you have it wrong when you suggest that going in slow is good. Speed is actually the key. That and having the guts to send the kite back with purpose and hold back .

I know these things and yet I set up telling myself go faster. Then I cut up wind and say send it back hard this time. At this point my inner child has sent the kite back real hard. ( my chicken #@%$#! left brain has told my muscle to hold back ) My child holds on until it can't hold on anymore. ( left brain says jump downwind ) I pop and my inner child is 10 ft high. My left brain says you got 12 inches off the ground and you are old so be happy !

Repeat.

One of these days I'm going to head out before my left brain wakes up and get a true 10 footer. I want it SOooooo bad but something inside keeps holding me back.

Yes redirect when airborne then just as you are touching down pull on the side you will be traveling and pull in a bit so you land with power moving you along again instead of just plunking down and powering up a second later.

SPEED= MORE OF EVERYTHING LIFT, HEIGHT , FLOAT

ONCE THE KITE HAS LIFTED YOU, LIKE TRIDUDE DECRIBED

KEEP THE POWER ON (BAR IN) AND JUST FLY THE KITE IN THE DIRECTION YOU WANT TO GO

WANT TO GO THE OTHER WAY TURN HEAD AFTER THE APEX OF THE LIFT AND STEER THAT WAY.

BE PATIENT ONCE IN THE AIR AND GENTLE ON THE BAR ..KEEP IT IN TO FLOAT DOWN EASY

AND A DOWN WIND RESULT WILL OCCUR BUT DON'T CLOUD YOUR BRAIN WITH THAT

SIMPLE ON STEP POP JUMPS ARE THE SAME, YOU WANT POWER FOR THE UP PART AND YOU WANT POWER FOR THE DOWN PART.

Oddly I used to be quite good at turning off the old noggin (if you ask the wife she'd say I still have a good knack for it ; )

I have to confess, I've quit the "if I'm not eating snow I'm not learning" mantra but truth be told, we just haven't had many days out there. I'll get it and once it's dialed in we'll get it on tape - which is when I'll REALLY start eating snow :embarrased:

If I can get ONE picture like dgkid's avatar I'll be a happy man!

Okay, here's a great shot with kite in view and I see no redirection (no sending the kite either). it's at 1:40 (enjoy the rest of the vid and then scrub back to see what I'm talking about). Is he just bearing off to build tension in the lines and then jumping? As simple as that?

In wakeboarding, that is called an "air" trick. Since he got the lift without sending the kite in an opposite direction, he didn't have to redirect. I imagine you can't do an air trick and have much float because the kite is more down in the window. It was slomo which made it seem more majestic, but he really just popped off the snow and then came back down, undoubtedly drifting downwind somewhat in the process since the kite was downwind from the rider.

HE RUNNING A DEPOWERED UNHOOKED SET UP ...MAKES THE KITE LIKE A C-KITE WHEN THE BAR IS HELD ALL THE WAY . ALWAYS FULL ON SO ANY BUMP OR EDGE BACK RESISTANCE PRODUCES LIFT ACCELERATION IN THE KITE WITH LITTLE INPUT. (FOR A XBOW THIS SET UP IS NORMAL NO STALL AT THE BOTTOM LIKE A PL HAS. PL HAS TO BE SET UP TO RUN UNHOOKED IN A DEPOWERED MODE WITH OUT STALL IN THE BAR.

THE MORE WIND THE LESS INPUT THE BAR NEEDS TO PRODUCES CHANGES.

GOES BACK TO THE "POWERED UP" ELEMENT.
HE 'S GOT BREEZE TO WORK WITH THAT'S MOST OF THE EFFORTLESS LOOK AND FEEL.
HE HAS GREAT BALANCE, TIMING AND AND KNOWS WHAT'S COMING WHICH IS SMOOTH FLOW. FELT THROUGH WIND SPEED, KITE RESPONSE AND BOARD FEEL. THEY HAVE TO WORKED TOGETHER: DISSECT ANY PART AND YOUR GONNA EAT IT.

IF YOUR NOT POWERED UP, THEN EVERYTHING HAS TO BE EXAGGERATED. KITE MOVEMENT TO JUMP WITH SLOWER RIG REACTION AND BIGGER BAR MOVEMENTS AND MORE LEG INPUT.(ACTUALLY JUMPING

KITE SPEED IS BLUNTED IN THE VIDEO IN APPEARANCE. HE'S CRANKING !

WHAT IS HARD TO REALIZE IN THE VIDEO IS THE RATE. SYSTEM VELOCITY AND VELOCITY OF INPUT WITHIN THE SYSTEM. BIG BRAIN BULL#@%$#! HAD TO.

JUST A LITTLE EDGE BACK PUSH (OR RAMP)WILL GENERATE A HOP /JUMP WITH OUT ANY KITE INPUT
