Dog Bites

Note the tiny small hole on my hand. And note the fn red strip that set in a few hours later. I love dogs, all of them, even the one that bit me. My doc says, if you are bit, no matter who you are, get in and be prepared for a 24 hr stay. And loads of IV antibiotics.

i'm guessing the red streak is an internal infection climbing up the arm and showing through the skin. crappy.
you'll be good to go for NABX though:Ange09:

It's called blood poisoning. travels very quickly and very serious. Medical attention is a must. Take good care of it, and what happened?

Not kiting. Long story short.
My grandma had a bad lung infection started around feb 14th. She spent 2 weeks in hospital, and came home on oxygen. Her dog, a "karin terrier" toto from wizard of oz, it think. kept messing in the hoses of the o2 set up. she asked me to relocate the dog. So I made a call found a home and proceeded.

North, Olive, and the suspect dog (gus) were playing at the beach, guess where, about an hour or so I loaded up my pups, they were all playing very hard, I reach to pick up Gus and clamp, just nailed my hand. So I loaded up gus, calmed him down, as he's 10 and going through a tough and untimely relocate. I cleaned it with Hydrogen peroxide about 15 mins later, wrapped it with ointment. Went home and went to bed. I woke up at 6:45 a.m. with a red streak. I barely told mish as I ran out to the ER.. 3 docs came in said they had a #@%$#!tail of anitbiotics I need right away Iv for at least 24 hrs or I'll loose thumb and for finger maybe suffer permanant damage in my left arm, or if it goes blood it could dump bacteria on the valves of my heart. they said it was LYmPH(onitis) or something and it's traveling fast.

I was like #@%$#!e, whatever I need to do, so they checked me in, after loads of blood testing and x-rays, they hooked me up for plumbing and moved me to a sweet corner room with flat screen dvd and my own bathroom/shower. Rested for 18hrs, was woke up where my doc said I needed to stay awake, no water, no food, nothing, then he pointed out the stripe had gone half way to my arm pit. NOT GOOD. So they gave me a few pills, make me feel all tingly and sweaty. As I saw the sun come up, I saw the strip go down, the doc wasn't satisfied, so he said surgery. a plastic surgeon came in, said we need to make some changes for surgery, I asked if it'd be quick, my girl will freak if she finds out, so out came 10ml litocane' and a needle and 'this is going to hurt like hell' he fit the whole (god damn) bottle of litocane in my hand, took about a half hour, then grabed blade and cut a hole about the size of a quarter in my hand to drain the bacteria pocket. GUshhshshshsh!

more pillz, and two more days in the HP, I've got what looks like a scratch, a lump and some nasty looking skin, and 60% strength in my hand.

It's going to be all good, timing sucks, I heard so many storied about dog and cat bites in the hospital I'm totally convinced that if one gets bit, kiting or not, its time to go to ER..

I've never been hospitalized. so this was a shocker to me...st vincents crew was amazing and treated my like a king while I was footin an uninsured bill.

Wow. Thats some scary stuff bud. Glad to hear you are doing okay.

I got bit by a dog around the corner from some family friends I was visiting in California, thankfully, his teeth didnt pierce the skin. I still have the mark on my arm from where he big me, but nothing really happened with it. Definitely something to think about though.

geez. that's pretty scary! who would have known a dog bite could be so serious?

I got a bad MRSA infection last August. It looked like a bug bite at first and 3 weeks later I was in the hospital with an 8" long surgical opening in my back. 8 days of draining the wound, a ton of antibiotics and $20,000 worth of medical bills and I was basically healthy and recovering. luckily insurance took care of about $18K of the bills.

I should add that I went to 3 different doctors before they figured out it was MRSA and was life threatening.

I'd say I'm pretty lucky to be alive right now. super bugs these days are getting really scary.

oh yeah they think that the antibiotics I was on before they discovered it was MRSA actually helped the infection spread by wiping out all the good competitive bacteria :eekdrull:

Hope you get healthy soon ELI and welcome to the "I survived" club

Hey Eli, hope you're feeling better soon.

Bites are nasty and can get nastier really fast - particularly with so many cases of MRSA (the antibiotic resistant skin eating strep) going around Clatsop County this year. Glad to see you had the forthought to go seek treatment before things got REALLY bad.

And don't worry too much about any loss of strength. Damaged muscles will eventually heal, and surrounding ones will learn to compensate for any residual weakness that's left.

Hope to see you soon on the beach.

Why is it that if dogs have cleaner mouths and they bite you, you get that, but if I bit you (with my "filthy" mouth) nothing would happen...? Is it just bacteria they have in their mouths we dont have an immunity to (because we dont have it in ours)?

THANK YOU. :embarrased:

The docs asked right away if I had insurance, I laughed, then they said "because we think you should check in" I stopped laughing. I tried to estimate based on nothing and came up with about 5-10k for dog bite. On day 3, I was pretty unhappy.

The Er doc said, If I'd waited till lunch to come in, I'd be there a week or more. Whats crazy is how my body is adjusting to the LACK of antibiotics.

It's nearly 80%, just crusty.

and w/holly #@%$#!e, i've got pics..pretty awesome pics, the gushhhhhhh for sure, but I think it's gnarly, I'll put it on my facebook or myspace or something. I took pics, couldn't hold it together well enough to film it. Needles in the hand hurt like "habenero" sauce in the eye.
