Total Collapse of Economy

What do fellow kiters think about current economic downturn?

I urge you to buy a dozen of kites for future decades or two...

Hah! well said!

I had a crappy day at work the other day, luckily it was windy and I flew my kite for about 30 mins afterwards, they are great stress relievers. When all else fails go fly a kite.

As far as the economic downturn, my wife and I are lucky enough to be in industries that thrive in this particular downturn (transportation and higher education) so we haven't really felt it, but I hate to see my friends losing their jobs because the mistakes and worse the corruption of a select few. We'll ride this low of the economic sine and come out eventually.

I work in the building materials industry, and it has been a little rough. But when other people at work freak, I just ask them what they can do about it. Can they fix it themselves? No? Then keep doing what makes you happy and we'll all get through it. We are a capitol driven economy and when we quit spending, the whole thing tanks. Fly, ride, travel, whatever. You only get one go around so make it a good one. My girl and I are stuck 1100 miles from home with a truck that blew up on the way to NABX and almost no money left, but we got to go and we are going to make it back home so why worry?

I am contracted to an American company that is going down the tubes FAST.

I got home from NABX to find out I am their latest victim. My cushy job that allowed me on here all the time has been ripped out from under me . I have been in-house electrician here for 16+ years from the time the building was new. It was " my baby ".

I am NOT out of a J.O.B. completely ! Just the cushy rutt that I have been padding and expected to ride to retirement.

Work is simply a way to fund kites to me. I'll be fine but the recession just kicked me squarely in the :moon:

Thankfully I got a pretty good quiver together when the Canadian dollar was at par. It is the EXCHANGE rate ( + the new Charger coming out ) that has me avoiding large kite purchases for now.

the saddest part is that many people don't understand the severity of this crisis. there is no way out of it. This is not a recession, this is not a depression it is the end of the civilization as we know it.

In order to get out of this mess that we are in, the governments must completely rethink the way world works. The economy based on the exponential growth is not possible on our planet. Our resources are limited, and there would be many wars to be fought for them...

Hopefully americans are not going to Invade Canada,,,, well, they kind of already did it, thought without moving in the troops. (think NAFTA agreement, specifically part where we must sell US oil at the same price as to canadians).

Anyhow, I suggest you guys watch "crash course by chris martenson" you can find it on google.

I agree! It seems to be going to hell-in-a-hand-basket in so many different ways! I live off the tourist $$. But with less people working, less people are coming out to the coast. And with less people coming out, less need for entertaining them. Thus, I'm down from 7 nights a week, to 3 or 4. Luckily my wife is still working, and we're able to just get by. But I don't know how much longer our local economy can hold out with such a shortage of tourist $$$.

The unfortunate byproduct of all of this, is that smaller local merchants who have the least amount of reserves will be the ones to cave in first. That unfortunately, gives more power to the mega Wal-Mart Corps. of the world. Just what the world needs! More of the people that got us into this mess in the first place!!

How about as a nation (as a world), we work on "Bailing Out" the "Mom & Pop" merchants, and let the Meglomaniacs-R- Us Inc.'s of the world, fend for themselves, or crumble under the weight of their own corruption! A much better use of funds. At least there'll be some accountability!

Well, enough ranting and chest pounding. Hope everyone makes it through OK. Oh! And I have a new slogan for the Oregon Coast! "Vacation on the Oregon Coast! Sure, it's colder right now, but it's cheaper then Cabo!!"

My job was claimed by the economy a few weeks ago. I was working in the high end photo industry in NYC. In Jan. the industry slowed down to a small crawl and eventually cost me my job.

I feel that the economy is in worse shape than people seem to admit, however, opprotunity is there.

The bright side is that I don't have to commute 3 hours a day anymore and I have more free time. Someone should pay me to fly kites, I'd gladly work 60+ hours a week!

Same 'ol same 'ol for me. To many people spent way to much in the early 2000's. To many inflated house prices that people just had to have regardless of cost. To much debt, to many credit cards, to much inflated costs for just about everything.

I don't feel this is a crisis caused completly by greedy, corrupt folks. It was also created by people who could not control themselves and spent everything they had plus got in huge debt.

When people barely able to pay rent. Who had no down payments and very little job history were given intrest only loans for houses with adjustable rates I figured it was only a matter of time before a crisis hit. It did. There was even adds that I heard on the radio that claimed you didn't even have to show proof of being a legal US citizen to get a mortgage loan for a house with a huge selling price!

Oh, well. I set myself up in the waste water industry. Everyone poops and pees so I won't ever be out of work. :spin:

It's time to buy lots of stuff that people screwed up buying brand new and now can't pay for. I'll get it cheap!

It stinks to lose a job
there is plenty other ones out there.

so far, my swimming pool biz is doing OK
but I have resorted to stopping complete strangers outside their
homes in an effort to sell myself
and my superior services,
just in case...
recession, I'm not participating.
depression? no way.
I've got old relatives who would drop grade school
so as to sneak up to idle freight trains
in order to steal produce to feed the family
during the original depression

disaster?
get serious
if this was a such a horrendous disaster
most of us would have already pawned off all or most
of our toys,
start working an extra job
no matter how #@%$#!ty or low paid,
thinkin,......fast food

this economic slowdown or whatever
is a lot of hype if you ask me

Kitepool-That's what I'm thinking. If it was so bad you wouldn't have an internet and cable and cellphone bill. I've seen people who are losing their house because they bought way to big for their budget but they have the cell phone, internet, nice car, plus fat to boot!

Anyone want to buy a kite? I have a Quadrifoil Competition XL that I want to sell because I don't use it anymore.

Have to agree with Speleopower to some degree. Even the health industry is feeling the crunch. When hospitals are laying off nurses you know it's bad. Fortunately working in a smaller hospital has it's perks, and thanks to the safe staffing law here in Oregon, I have some sense of job security.

My thoughts go out to our fellow fliers who have felt the pinch in this crisis.

Don't get me wrong we are feeling a crunch but it's just a crunch. Everything got way out of control price wise for a few years.
For example my neighbor bought her house in 2005 for almost $400,000. It is the same exact house and lot size as mine except her pool is about 1/2 the size of my pool. I paid $125,000 for my house 2 doors down in 2002. :puzzled:
:puzzled:
People got carried away and didn't think about what they were doing a few years ago.

It's the knee-jerk reactions that piss me off ...
"Ooh it's a recession ooh so scary ooh lets fire thousands of workers in case our PROFITS fall"
... they're making less profit (not a loss mind you) so they freak out?!?!

A buddy in Australia had to take a pay cut cos of the recession - despite their company making one of the best profits that past financial year :shocked2: this is not uncommon ... notice they're not laying off the inept management :flaming:

Fear-mongering - I thought Michael Moore was a bit of a tosser but I think he's right ... the media is making sure people are scared all the time. Save the whales, save the beef cos cows make methane, save gas cos it's running out, save the environment cos of global warming, save money cos of the recession ... dude WTF is next to be afraid of? Anyone remember El Nino? La Nina? The hole in the ozone layer? The rain forests? Aren't we worried about them anymore?

Actually, scratch that - it's not fear-mongering, it's giving the sheep of the world something to keep in the front of their minds in case they wake up and start insisting #@%$#! get sorted out :flaming:

... I'm gonna go fly my kite too :bisou:

Yeah... I got a kite. Or two...

While some people are getting seriously impacted by the economic times, those of us who arent hurting need to keep doing what we are doing and continue to spend money on stuff to keep the economy going. Fearmongerings makes things worse. Sure the sheep need something to glue their little eyeballs onto, but the rest of us can keep living our lives the best way we can.
