Normally I just see the umbrellas tumbling down the beach on windy days like that waiting to impale someone. Finally they have been put to good use. Maybe that's one way to get around the kiting bans this summer

Hey guys! Crazy idea, huh? I was kiting, but my friend Brian got upset with me if I "dived" his kite, so I had to come up with my own form of entertainment! I've even taught other people to do this, because it's relatively safe. Of course, it's not possible to "deflate" the 'brella when it's full of wind, but just turning 180 degrees (into the wind) and it comes right down. If you keep turning, it re-inflates (or stays that way if you know what you're doing) and you can go back the way you came. It takes more effort and time, but pretty soon, you'll be scooting along into the wind!

I have tried several different umbrellas, and it takes a very sturdy one---this one is wooden. I'm working on a larger "chute" for the same frame.

You can't tell from the video, but I've gotten going pretty fast on it. In fact, as fast as some of the times I've used the kite. 15-20 mph winds are best.

So far, folks on the beach have been very accepting, and often cheering me along! Kids love to see it, so the "old folks" (like me) aren't complaining. So far...

Beach is on Mustang Island---Port Aransas, TX. The wooden umbrella doesn't turn inside-out, but I am using kite string on the modified version I'm working on. I surf, water ski competitively, sail a Lazer, and have flown experimental airplanes among other sports. But there's something about harnessing the wind and rolling down a beach that is addictive. Try it. It really is fun.

Yea that looks like a blast.

Wish I had a video where we stretched a hammock across three kayaks and covered almost three miles. I know, not near the same but it made me think about it.
