:puzzled:

I'm intrigued as to why you might need a windspeed gauge (although I stand to be corrected by the more experienced). When sailing, I have always used the Beaufort Scale, allowing you to estimate windspeed based upon observation of its effects.

Whilst not totally accurate, I have always found it good enough and it should suffice to indicate whether things are too windy for your kite, or to judge which one you want to use.

If you are not familiar with the scale, the following link should hel;p out ..........http://www.kitepower.com Then select the link to Beaufort Scale.

...... and it's cheap / free.

Howdy Buggy Brethren,
I have some insight on the use of meters...
Care to listen?

Well... I use a wind meter as a calibration tool.
For my eyes.

In live in the desert. Not much moving stuff to help see the wind.
But we adapt and learn to notice the minute shrubs and foliage that might slightly quiver in a wind.
After spotting anything that moves, I guess the windspeed.
That's right - Guess.

Here's the rub... Most stop at this point. With that guess.
I think it's like fishing and the speed just keeps going up.

My meter allows me to calibrated my eyes.
I have an accurate reference to compare to.
I've found my abilty to see the wind to have become quite accurate (within 1 mph) in speeds between 2-3mph and 22-24 mph.

Also, the cost of the meter isn't the most important.
When we parked a distance from where we flew, pocket-sized made the difference between having it handy and leaving it in the car.
Now I park where I fly and a slightly larger meter (Tripod-mountable and a large LCD screen) is quite welcome.

Wind is a constant variable, so accuracy beyond a single decimal point is, well, pointless.
The ball float meters are the simplest, and therefore less expensive.

I carried a small electronic Swiss made meter in my pocket for 17 years.
Always available and a trusted companion.
What a great value at $90 (in those days)
Now, comparable Swiss wind meters can be found for less than $50

Should I have waited for the cheaper price?
That is a false economy.
I had many years of value, long after I got over the shocking price.

The Beaufort Scale is fine for observational enthusiasts, but wind meters have their place too. Actually, they're complimentary.

I'm often wrong, but never in doubt.

Safen Up! Buggy On!
