Heal well and soon Josh.
It's never good when a family member (at home or out kiting) gets hurt. Know that there is an entire family of friends and friends-to-be looking for you to be back on the playa.

Go ahead... tell me to "go fly a kite!" Please!

Josh I feel your pain. I was so lucky to not be hurt worse myself a couple of years ago. I am glad they got you flown out. I hope the surgeries go well and you heal quickly. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

BB thanks for the info on how it happened. It is so important to pay attention and learn from others so that we can all remain safe. If any other good info comes out of this please share. I personally bought some hillbilly pants after my crash to hopefully save my a$$ next time.

Many, many thanks to all of you for the concern and well wishes. I'm pretty sore just about now, still no surgery scheduled, but thanks to my family and friends, and to my PKF family as well my spirits are high. I've taken a turn or 2 at lot of other sports, and I must say that kiters are some of the most genuine people I have ever met. Your concerns are much appreciated, and don't worry- y'all aren't getting rid of me that easy! Besides, I have a score to settle with that vapor now.

Lol, no fire Dagon. Don't let my mistake discourage a trip out there. It is like visiting a whole different planet. After I rehab this I would love to ride out there with you. It is a rather extreme place but so very worth it.

Summer is a tough one out there. I gets pretty hot during the day. From my trips this past year, I would say that you can get riding in then, but it is inconsistent. What I saw was what I called a sun set blow that usually lasted for 45 minutes to an hour and a half as the sun was setting behind Steens mountain on the west side. My theory on it is that the playa as a whole is big enough to effect the atmospheric pressure above it by acting like a giant heat exchanger. Temp swings of 40+ degrees as the sun sets are the norm for that time of year. If you want to explore, see what it's all about, have a good time, but be ready for some brain baking sun then summer is ok. You just have to know that on a short trip you may not get the conditions you want

If you want to try to go really fast you will generally need to chase storms. The best riding I saw was in September and October, although you can get it now too (hence my injury, oops.) It does present some problems for tent camping at these times of year, but you can either car camp, stay at Fields station, or tent it. We (my family, csa-deadon and his daughter) have done all 3 but your average tent doesn't provide much shelter in the good riding weather. My honest recommendation would be to stay at Fields Station. It's about 20 miles away, but you can see all the way to the playa from the parking lot. Nice to be able to get out of the elements and get a shower and a real bed. Rooms are available there from $65 to $90 a night. Not 5 star, but they are a comfortable home base. There are only 4 rooms available, but they range from 2 to 3 bedrooms with queen sized beds. Call ahead for reservations and be aware also that during peak hunting seasons these rooms go fast.

Alvord is an amazing place, even non-riders are left speechless the first time they see it. If you want more info, call or e-mail me.
