Mood: chilled....but ready to SAIL!

[*] posted on 5-1-2009 at 07:38 AM

the biggest issue i have ....someone to operate the the freaking camera. my wife and kid are just not into it. i even prep the gear. the few pictures i have are a result of being out for so long they come to the beach looking for me or a kind stranger of rare occurrence.

any way the tripod thing is coming out again, the few times i tried it the battery dies after about 15min and don't get squat footage

any way super nice on the vid and has encouraged me to keep dragging the coyotes to the beach

Mood: slick as a leopard!!

i was thinking of making a set of all terain skates. i already have some leapskates but i cant get on with them as i find them too long. i made some quad alterrain skates but the stance is abit wide, so i was thinking of making some in the style of rollerblades but with mountainboard wheels. they will only be 2 wheels and only slightly longer then the boots with the wheels mounted below the boot. i doubt i will use them for speed runs as thats not my thing (i can only blast up the beach so many times until i get bored) any advantages to this idea or disadvantages?

i saw the quad things kinda disco trippy

if you want plain easy fun COYOTES the choice

super easy platform

the doom set with the 8" wheels are a little better and reduce the lenght but they are not skates ....they are more like skis fun but still need to be hopped for turns

From what I have seen on video it looks like the problem with the 4 wheel roller skate style is that is isn't as easy to get in a good position angled against the kite ?

I think it is being able to lean on that edge created with inline wheels that works best ?

I LOVED roller skating and as was pretty darn good at it at a very young age. ( pre-disco ) I can see them with the skate wing but not with a kite ! Not for me at least !

Mood: addicted to wind

[*] posted on 30-4-2009 at 12:23 AM

I started launching myself into the air for the first time this winter. My very first jumps were actually on the custom ice skates I built. Needless to say, the landings were very unforgiving. No real incidents to speak of, but I did have a good wake up call when I launched myself up about 4-5ft & came straight down. The impact sent an electric shock all the way from my heels up to my neck. Not that it deterred me though. Once the lake was covered with snow I started jumping my skis. Got to the point of being able to launch myself up to 20ft & glide out 30-40ft before touching the ground again. Of course not all of my landings have been graceful, & I did crack a rib once. Caught a gust that sent me 20ft up higher than I was expecting & landed completely off balance. Slammed my shoulder into the ground when I came down & blew out a rib on the other side... ooops! I've been wearing mt friends impact vest ever since. Gotta get me one!

Snow season just ended at the beginning of the month, so I've switched to skates & am now applying what I've learned to that. So far I've only bruised my hip, so I think I'm doin allright.... A few things for anyone that's just getting into jumping with doomwheels: Always keep your skates in front of you're center of gravity when in the air. I've been able to slide out with my skates in front of me even when I don't land them properly. I can feel that if my skates were to touch down behind my center of gravity it'd be all to easy to get twisted up & blowing out a knee, hip or whatever. Tucking in your knees once you lift off is the easiest way to do that. I'm not sure if it's any different with a foil, I'm using LEI kites with my skates, but for me, the easiest way to launch up is to get some speed going perpendicular to the wind with the kite up at around 2 o'clock. I then swing my kite up to 11:00, point my skates slightly upwind & pull in on the bar just as the kite crosses 12:00. Once I lift off I turn the kite back to the direction I was going & point my skates about 45 degrees into the wind for a landing. I've done this quite a few times now in my last 4 or four session & have flown at least 10ft high & 30 ft out. Loving every second of hand time in the process!
I just uploaded some footage from a light wind day that I added to one of my other posts, there's a few wimpy hops in there, but it was my first time out with the new skates & they're way, way heavier than the Leapskates I've been running up til now.
