What happened Brian...?

Not sure........:puzzled:...but this thing has happened before..

I got at the beach today at around 5:30 pm. Before I could even put a kite up one of the life guards approached me and asked to only ride north of section 8 due to the piping plovers. I nicely complied and then got a couple of hours of very nice riding.
Wind onshore in the low to mid teens. Had a 3.5m century up in the air and loved it. These kites are absolutely awesome.

How can a bird so "endangered" manage to shut down every beach on the east coast during the summer? Plovers are the most prolific "endangered" species I've ever encountered.

GLX and Ski. Am I hopefully to get out this Saturday afternoons low tide. Wind looks like it could end up mostly onshore, mid teens, mid to low 60s, light rain, 2:40 low tide. Seems like the forecast should mostly clear the beach goers.
What do you guys think?

The cool temps alone will keep populace thin... the clouds, even more so... and the rain, well, you'll own the beach.

Gravityguy I am planning on being out there too but earlier because I have people coming over for dinner. Will probably be there around 1030-11 and pack up no latter than 230ish.

Saturday was a very good day. Good on shore winds and a completly empty beach. Six meter Cent ii got me a little over 50 miles in just about 3.5 hours of riding.
Also gravityguy (in a buggy) and buggydanny (on a board) were out there riding. Ski also made a quick appearance. Awesome day on the beach.

GLX - it was a great time. I wonder if you got any good footage from a couple of those runs. You will have to post when you get it sorted out.

I would like to get the people who ride Nahant feelings on the following. I would like to start a topic under the Land use... ... ... catogory to gather the best practices and requests for our land use at the beach. A little self policing and a listing of what we think the current best practices and requests are might help us communicate and allow for the enjoyment of the beach. I am thinking a topic with the first post containing a list of Nahant guidelines/recomemdations we self impose, the agreement we have for use, and the seasonal requests we get.
I think the first post could be a list of the basic guidelines followed by dates requests. People post seasonal/ new onsite requests in the topic which, could be vetted if necessary, and added to the 1st post.
I can spear head this and manage the topic if we think this is a good idea. I know many of you have forged this ground before and have a good base on this topic and am happy to join in this.
Anyone feel free to U2U me or post here you thoughts.

Camera ran out of battery when you were setting up and I was having too much fun to fiddle with it after. Although it would have been awesome to get some footage of the runs we did together. Will keep it in mind for next time to spend the couple of minutes and change the battery.

I think the idea of the posts with requests from DCR is a very good one. There are a few sporadic comments through this post but it will be good to put everything on one post and update it accordingly. Currently the only thing i have been personally asked, is to stay North of section 8 due to the bird nesting grounds.

DCR is inconsistent and occasional in their enforcement -and thank gosh!... because officially, kite powered vehicles are not allowed as written in the regulations.


Point one- Our Status:

We have been put off ,for the most part, at attempts to become an (no official rule against) allowed activity- like walking, swimming, sunbathing.


Pressing the officials any further in efforts is a precarious venture as they can not only say no, but if you upset them in your attitude or aggression they can start enforcing a total ban.


Point Two- Our Best Policy:

Follow previous requests from DCR(like don't ride the life guard controlled areas past section #9-as one example) and use good safety practices and self policing. We have stated some requests and self-guidelines previously, but a consolidation and list is indeed a good idea. If you want to start a new thread, for this and post, please do.

I still have the original Traction Safety Guidelines document in PDF format that we drafted in May of 2009 when they first banned us from the beach. Post or u2u me your email address if interested and I will send it along.

Thanks I knew there had been something worked on in the past. These guidelines will be a good start for some general guidelines for the post.
I figure the post can contain general guidelines and track the seasonal requests we get on the beach from lifeguards, wildlife reasearchers, etc. It increases our communication of the requests and alert/give us a place to point new riders to best practices on this beach.

Wow! Looks like the beach was awesome! Glad to see you guys got out!

Beach was great, almost empty due to the high/cool winds. Winds were high enough that at times a 3.5m was slightly overpowering. Awesome for us. Looks like this afternoon might be a repeat due to the cool weather and the clouds that are starting to roll in.

New short surface area of a thin shell crust that was an interesting traction change of pace under the wheels...made crunching sounds for an audio change of pace , perhaps more than anything.:wee::wee:

I did get some video of you and should have some of danny too because had the cam rolling most of the time. I am hopping i captured a looooong two wheeler from him. Will go through what got captured and post today (or tomorrow, if I end up going out again today).

Beach was fairly full mid-day today...waiting for them to leave...

Yesterday did not turn out to be as good as Friday. Less wind to start with and then dropped to nothing. Nevertheless a decent day.

Has to be pretty cool AND cloudy on weekend day near peak vacation season with low tide mid-day, instead of early evening.


Early evening is opportunity window in summer. Sometimes even after a busy day it sometime opens if most all go home for dinner. Still light well after 8 pm

Looks like good on-shores all day too...damn.

Maybe pre-dusk kite rollerblading in parking lot ...best odds if any kiting.

Against all better judgement and a flight to catch in the evening, could not resist from hitting Nahant on Sunday. Raining, on shore winds in the low to mid teens. Beach was completly empty barring a half dozen water kiters. 3.5m and 4.5m cent ii went up one after the other. Very wet ride, 31 miles in and a max of 37.9 mph. Awesome day in Nahant before running to the airport.

This is a diehard who rides in the rain!:o

BTW...how did those Century kites fly soaking wet...or was it not soaking wet?
( Single Skins fly better wet than foils...)

And...

How are your wheel bearings holding thru the wet riding...as it seems you've done a bunch of wet riding in past, haven't you?

Kites got very heavy. I started with 3.5m and the wind came down a notch but mainly I had to change to 4.5m because the 3.5 got extremly heavy. It was fine once I got going and apparent wind kicked in but every time I turned it was very difficult to keep the kite going. As for the bearings i dont think rain water does much more harm to them than the salt water when riding the wet pack. After every session I thoroughly hose down the buggy and every 2-3 times i spray all bearings with silicone lubricant. Still on my first set of bearings (with no perceivable downgrade) since January when I got this buggy.
