Due to low winds, I have only peeked in the bag to look at it. It hasn't had the opportunity to get unfolded yet. My weekend opened up quite a bit yesterday, so if the wind blows, I can get some flight time in.

Lets hold off on the beans for now.

The Ace has also been grounded.

I had some 8mph inland winds last Saturday near my house, so I grabbed the kite and went to the school yard across the street. In the 10-15 minutes or so that it took me to get the kite ready to go, the wind literally died. No flag movement, no tree movement, no breeze on the face! :ticking: I'm sure I looked silly out in the field with cars driving by, wondering what this guy is doing standing in a field with a "parachute". :frog:

The next day at Galveston the wind was 20 mph+ and I'd forgotten my safety gear. Needlesstosay, I didn't put the Ace up. I'm hoping for inland breezes this Sunday.

Well I dont feel so bad now as I see I am not the only one with lack of wind. I have been grounded for about 2 weeks! The wind only blows about 4,6,8 mph. Nothing more. I need to get a bigger kite for those winds.:borg:

We are clear blue skies here and a warm 65 degrees. But the winds at 3-6 mph tomorrow as well. I'm gonna get some of the kids in the neighborhood to let me ride in the back of a golf cart and get them to go about 10 mph. Oh, what if it drags me out? Bad idea. Am I the only one that comes up with stupid ideas and then in seconds figures out the way I can die or be seriously injured with the idea? We have 8 mph on Monday. I might just go for it after work.

Simple, just tie a rope to the handles, and tie that rope around your waist!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and then tie yourself to the cart, how can you get pullled out then? It's nearly impossible....

er... rather, no. I guess you aren't the only one with stupid ideas :D

Bad idea, you'd be much better off to use a harness, hook in and tie a 20ft rope from the back of the harness to a golf cart.

I have the brooza. I am going into the mountains this weekend and there are 10-11 mph winds forecast. It should be steady enough up on top of the plateau to give her a go. If it doesn't pan out, I will just send it on its way. I don't want to hold up progress.

Mood: Longing to fly more

[*] posted on 15-10-2007 at 01:27 PM

I was able to get the Ace 5.0m into the air on Saturday afternoon off-and-on for about an hour on intermittant inland 8-10 mph winds. I took it out again yesterday in some stronger, more consistant 15'ish inland winds.

As AirH0g said on the Blade thread, I too was tossed around a bit by the 5.0m ACE in these conditions! :) Nice 6-10m scuds on grass, a long flight off a pendulum jump, and perpetual lift tendancies made for some exhilerating flight time. My arms and shoulders welcomed the harness after about 20 minutes.

It could have just been the inland wind and possibly brake setup, but I had some difficulties with luffing and bow-ties when redirecting from 10 or 2 o'clock to the zenith. I suspected brake lines since braking to the ground and reverse launching were very poor. In fact, trying to land almost always resulted in a counter-clockwise rotation of the kite which I could not balance out with the handles. I didn't have enough time to experiment with solutions, and I don't want to hog the kite any longer to try to figure it out. For the next flyer, just make a mental note of my observations in case you too experience this. Again, it could have just been my lines setup or the less-than-ideal inland winds.

Finally, a little scary tale:
I let my friend take the controls which was a mistake. He had flown my 2.5m and 3.0m extensively in 12 mph winds before without problems. So I warned him that this kite in 15 mph would have more pull, more lift. Instructed him to keep it near the zenith and out of the powerzone. I demonstrated keeping center-of-gravity low, sticking the butt WAY out to counter the pulls (hopefully avoiding supermans). He was about to launch when I said "Wait! Kite killers!" Thank you brain for remembering that, because as soon as he launched he was off, chasing the kite all over the place. He couldn't stabilize it. He over-compensated his redirects, driving the kite too low rather than to the zenith. :( In the end, it finally pulled him off his feet, and he had to let go of the handles and use the kite killers since the kite was dangerously approaching the trees at the edge of the park!

My friend got some "road rash" from the grass on one leg and arm and some bruising but said it was mainly the humble pie that hurt :'( The kite killers did their job and the kite came down before encountering any arborial matter. He has a new appreciation for the wind, and it reinforced in my mind the use of safety gear.

Kiteboarder, I've U2U'd you for a shipping address. I hope to get this in the mail to you early next week, just in case I find some time to play with those brake lines this week.

Hey,

Okay, so as some of you may know, I have recently fractured my wrist.
I should be fully healed by Nov 1st though, so I was thinking, should we send the brooza to Prarie Wind after Gilligan and then to me and I can continue it on back to you Pablo?

Unless BeamerBob and Gilligan keep it till after Nov 1st, then I should be fine.

I think I've always been an unofficial know it all, didn't realize that there was that many posts over there.

Brooza II's are out, Basically the same as the Brooza I, but have the adjustable bridal, wing tip zippers to clean out the kite and a print on both sides of the kite instead of just the top.

Combats arrive some time before friday, so I've been trying to get the Brooza's around and done. Once they're finished then a Combat will be going on tour to those that can handle it.

It'll be somewhere between a 3.4m and a 5m, I'm going to have to go with common sense on this one, While underpowered with a race kite sucks, the combat is quite quick and abrupt with the power delivery, it'd be easy for a noob to get into trouble quickly.

More than that, putting someone on a race kite before they're ready will be a completely miserable experience for them, If they're not used to using the brake lines as an active part of flying the kite then best to stay away from the combat. You need to use the brakes to really turn the kite, and you won't get anywhere near the performance out of it if you don't understand how to shape a kite using the brake lines. If you're not aiming for 40mph+, you really have no use for one.

BeamerBob-

I sent the ACE your way on Tuesday by priority mail from Houston. You should see it any day now. Hopefully you'll get it in time to fly this weekend. You can check the delivery confirmation at www.usps.com with #0306 0320 0005 4156 4841. It's showing that it was processed in Atlanta yesterday.
