This will be my first trip to the playa, and I'm curious about tires myself.

My tires are a little worn right now, (the main tread in the center is worn off, but not into the tire body yet.)

Should I look into getting new tires before coming? Or should these be sufficient? If I do have a tire go out, are there generally people there with tires to sell? (And at what kind of inflatted rate?) Or is it better to bring spares. (keeping in mind that I'm flying out there.)

Chip, since you need new tires anyway I suggest you go ahead and get the playa recommend 4-ply slicks. You still have time to order and mount them if you get them here:

Size is 480-8. You will have to call them to order new tubes (also recommended) since they aren't listed on the website (last I checked). Tractor Supply has the tubes also.

Remove the valve core to deflate the tires when flying, then air them up to between 15 and 30lbs, depending on who you talk to once you get there. Stop by the red BuggyTexas trailer and I'll air them up for you.

Three tires will be plenty unless you plan on racing. If you need more then you might want to call Corey at Windpower Sports in Vegas. In the past he has reserved spares for folks ahead of time and brought them with him. Assuming he still will, just don't expect him to go chasing down parts at the shop during the event. Call ahead.

Mounting tips: The 4 ply tires are stiffer so it helps to use a little liquid dishwashing soap on the bead when mounting. Careful not to puncture the tube. Check for leaks ahead of time.

So normaly one sent of tires is plenty? I was browsing around and noticed that several people complain about going through tires really fast.

I'll only be there half of thursday to end of monday, and I'm not a racer (not untill I've at least watched a race once!) Mostly I plan on crusing.

very funny. i think we need a one on one race. i`ll blow your kite right of the sky. the playa is where i come alive. i buggy alot diff. on the playa than i do at texas.
ok. so if anybodys got extra tires. please bring them with you. i will have a new set with me. but it doesn`t hurt to have extra tires there.

That's the key.

Are you running 2 ply or 4 ply?
It isn't much of an issue on grass or sand, but the playa is an abrasive surface and one can (it's not mandatory) wear through 2 ply tires in an aggressive weekend.

If you have no tread left but not yet down to the cord, I'd suggest a new set of 4 ply tires.

Tread or smoothie deosn't really matter either.
If you buggy on grass most of the year, a set with the subtle "airline rib" circular tread pattern will work fine out here, and be better on the grass at home than the smoothies.

I don't like doing business on the playa, but if you place orders ahead of time, I will bring the gear out with me.

About the pricing... Perhaps in the other world (the "default" world) we've grown accustomed to being treated as a "walking wallet" and just assume the buggy world is the same.
Not so.
I don't raise my prices. In fact I support the buggy world and buggy riders and often give discounts (particularly to AKA members).
I don't charge sales tax on orders delivered to California (Ivanpah Dry Lake is in California) nor any shipping or handling.
I bother to have inventory on hand when y'all arrive.
Yet I don't get in anybody's face and try to get anyone to buy anything.

So I have smoothies, a couple treads and some 16/6.50 x 8 turf tires.
I also have some Flexi X-wide tires on plastic rims.

Just so you know.

I am often wrong, but never in doubt.
