Alright I agree, seems like a silly place to post a tech problem but I know there are some pretty smart and technical people on this forum so here goes....

I can't for the life of me figure out how to load a large .avi file from my camera (Canon Powershot A560) onto my XP (SP2) system. Attaching to a USB port...I access the file directly off the camera using explorer (well actually using the 'Windows Scanner wizard' and then choosing advanced users) and when I try to copy the file from the camera to my desktop..it goes through the motion but about 2mins later, the window disappears and the file is on the desktop...but, it is 0 bytes.

I don't have any issues with smaller .avi's and it copies fine on Vista.

I believe this is a known problem with Microsoft XP.

I have tried the recommendations off their (Micrsoft) web site (hotfix) and read that someone tried SP3 but the problem persisted.

I tried to search for key words off Google and I did get some hits, but nothing seems to work. I checked the Canon website but found anything of value.

Any help or links would be greatly appreciated...I'm at the point where I'm about ready to give up..and I can't let this thing beat me!

How large a file is it? And is this internal camera memory or is it on a memory card?

Have you tried to do it through the zoombrowser ex software?: Select your operating system and the download link is a little below that.

This particular file is just a tad over 600mb. Unfortunately, I don't know where that magical point is where it works and doesn't work.

It's a 2gb SIMM card.

Well, that idea is out, 600mb isn't big enough to make XP barf. If you can get a card reader other than the camera, you could try plugging it into your computer that way.

f0rgiv3n - I haven't tried the zoombrowser software yet but I don't think it will work...it appears to be at the OS/driver level.

Maven454 - I've thought about that and it might work...but I keep thinking that there's got to be a way to make it work without going that route...call me stubborn.

Well, them's the ideas we've got. I suppose that the other option is you use the Vista machine to copy it onto a USB drive and move it to the XP machine from there... But that doesn't really solve the actual problem, just circumvents it.

Yeah, that's what I've been doing in the past, but for me it's just more of a challenge now.

I have the same problem with large vid files off my Canon A640 to XP. I went to Staples and picked up a USB Card reader by SanDisk. Was about $15 and looks like a flash drive. Handles multiple cards, but SDHC was the one I needed it for. Works like a charm.

Well, there we go then, sounds like you just need to get yourself a card reader.

Just read part of your other post. You said it's a 2GB "simm"? Should be an SD or SDHC card. As far as I know, "SIM's" only apply to cell phones, but you could be referring to something i'm unaware of. Anyway, just make sure of the card you're using, and be sure that the reader you pick up can read the card. The SanDisk reader I got works great for me and handles SDHC, which is what i'm using in my Canon PowerShot. Oh, and I don't see that SanDisk reader on Staple's website, but they do carry it in my local store.

I kinda wondered about the SIMM thing too, but didn't ask.

Ok...I think I'm just going to go to Fry's and pick up a Card Reader...getting tired of banging my head and for $15 bucks it ain't worth it.

...maybe after I've had two glasses of Vodka Red Bull I'll revisit the OS issue...if I don't have a heart attack first :wow:

No worries, I figured the "simm" was a typo or something, just wanted to be sure so we weren't steering you in the wrong direction. Hope a card reader works for you and everything gets sorted out.

do the card reader thing. also make sure you get the right reader for your flash type, theres sd, sdpro, xsd, microsd, ... and many more. Take you'll out card out and double check which sd it is. if this doesn't work try anoter computer

also for reference, sdhc is generally just in sizes bigger than 4gb. if you have sdhc be sure to get a reader that supports it. most good ones will at this point. cheap readers may not.

I had issues getting stills off of my cannon XTi- not with moving the files but just accessing the camera. H*ll with it- usb multi-card reader was like $10 and works like a charm (well OK the second one did. The first had a loose connection on the board.) 4g worth of stills in one shot- I like it.
