Back to Jekyll

Getting spontaneous and heading to Jekyll tomorrow. Low tide at 3:02 PM and it looks like the wind will come up for the incoming tide. Angus, Mel...anyone else interested? You know where to find me!

Thought I'd report. It was a long drive...lots of traffic and rain. On the way in we went through a real boomer in Brunswick but when we arrived at the beach I was excited to see a brisk easterly making whitecaps and the tide starting to come in. I met Angus at Blackbeard's, unpacked quickly and hauled everything out to the beach. I was determined. Unraveling the lines to my Pulse 2 12 mtr, I was excited but the clouds were building on the inland side of the island and, even though the seabreeze was up, the black clouds were moving toward the beach. Angus and I conferred and I waffled back and forth about busting the kite out of its bag. Several lightening bolts later we decided to bag it and I went to retrieve my wife and daughter from the sandbar which was quickly disapearing with the incoming tide. As Angus and I walked out the spit, the easterly wind started to die and you could see the storm front was going to win the battle. We all started back to where we left the gear when the westerly wind started to kick up and we felt the storm descending on us. The wind had done a 180 in the space of about 20 minutes and spiked at 30 knots. I am so glad that I acted cautiously because that might have been my Youtube moment as I was swept off to Bermuda by that freak storm. Thanks to Angus for helping me make a well-considered decision. We all went and shared a pitcher of beer and waited out the torrential downpour before driving home. 11 hours in the car and no kiting but I lived though it without any bad craziness. I must be finally maturing. : )

i've been riding in front of and between huge thunderheads for about a week. 20-30mph but as soon as they get close the wind turns off. this time of year the wind is hard to call . the better rides come in the fall with rain and no sparks, or hurricanes between the bands.

outstanding effort

That was an exercise in patience. I figure I have at least one really good day in the bank now.

Unfortunately, the landboard didn't even make it out of the car! I was gonna hit the water or bust! It was a long drive home.

I would go in a heartbeat but we have relatives visiting until Saturday. Wind looks perfect for tomorrow and Friday at Jekyll but I can't get out of here until Sunday when the wind turns to crap.

How's it look in your neck of the woods on Sunday?

As far as tides go, Labor Day Weekend is going to be best at Jekyll. Winds go to crap after Friday but can't forecast too far out. At this point, if its a choice between Jekyll and Sullivan's Island, I'm going to Sullis.

I have local commitments that weekend but if the wind blows Clark Hill lake won't ever be the same. I'm itching for another session on the water. I have to buggy too though so it doesn't think I'm cheating on it.

Tridude, Let me study the tide tables, the wind forcasts, the moss on the rocks, the whale snot on the beach and the new beer taps at Blackbeards and I will get back to you.

BTW, major whale sightings off Kite Beach last weekend; who knew? No one knew what size board they were on though.

Starting this Before payday, BUT anyone interested in a mid week Aug - 31 - Sep 3, one or maybe 2 of those days? Like I said, depending on the paycheck (Obama hasn't given me that stimulus $$ yet, still waiting...) I ought to be able to road trip for an (cheap) overnighter. Maybe sleep in my truck.... A cozy garage would work fine -- Hey Angus, you live near by, right? (Insert awkward silence with cricket sounds here....)
