My new HQ Rush II 250 kite took a bad hit at the beach and it blew out most of the cells. Ouch! Obviously, my control bar and lines are in perfect shape, so does anyone out there have a new or used HQ foil I could buy? If the price is right, I'd even be willing to buy the whole package if need be. Blow-outs like this aren't on warranty! :(

I'm curious about that beach hit which blew out most of your cells...

can you tell a bit more?

also try pming dakites / accampbell / awindofchange (not sure on the last two spellings) they can tell you if there are any other options besides looking for used canopies on the forum.



fixed bridles, flying static, been two years now... ??? folks must be wondering....

sting 1.7, dp power 2.5, crossfire 3.2, ace 5, blade iv 6.5, ace 8, ace 12...

also a couple of arcs, 12 syn and 12 phanny, but i\'m not yet up to speed on them.

Apparently I took too hard of a crash on a beach during a gusty day on the Oregon coast. The kite's leading edge hit straight down on the sand and the air pressure on the cells must have burst the inner dividers.....ALL of them! I called HQ and they said that kind of damage isn't under warranty. I didn't even notice the tears until I tried flying it again....the cells looked inflated as one (not separately) and I didn't have the same control bar response. I brought her down gently and was shocked by all the damage inside the foil! I'm supposed to go kiting in Chicago in a few weeks, so I need to find a solution soon.

what speed were the the winds? sounds like the kite was pretty much traveling full speed in the power window....

if you were getting air with that kite, you were WELL powered!

another risk to add to the many involved with jumping small kites in big winds.... most of those are risks to the pilot tho, not the kite.

glad to hear you're safe, better the kite than you.

just wait til you jump the bigger kites in lesser winds -- much more enjoyable!

soft sand makes a huge difference, I have that too as a great jumping area on the beach where I fly most often these days.

edit: you crashed it into the soft sandy area as well?

yes, that's why i can't believe it sustained so much damage! must have been more related to the air pressure inside the kite when it hit (than to the speed of impact)

hmmm actually speed of impact = speed through air = air pressure... I think.

in other words, the faster you're flying the kite, the more it's pressured inside, and the higher the pressure the greater the chance of damage....

and yeah, I'm not sure there's much diff between soft sand and hard sand when you hit it hard with a kite...

good luck replacing the canopy... do U2U a few HQ dealers on here and see if there is anything they can do to help you get your hands on a canopy... I doubt they will, tho...

or ask them if they know of any kites in that size range that would work on that bar set-up.

Your equation isn't necessarily always true. :) I think the kite hit at such an angle that it created the perfect "seal" with the sand, thereby changing the air pressure at too rapid of a rate. So in essence I could have crashed harder at a different angle and the kite would have been just fine. I think we need to contact a physics major...

but it seems like you left the best for last! you hit the sand right on the leading edge, eh? I agree with you, that's the likely the main reason the cells burst...

sorry to hear you lost your kite, tho... you must be jonesing badly!

I think your are right. Like a jeweler hitting a diamond I think you had do smack it just right. This is really hard to do. I've had members of public frequently smack my kites into the ground real hard and never blown a cell.
True that you will not likely find a kite only, since for this kind of kite the sail and rig won't outlast each other beside maybe just lines.

As a last resort, call these guys, tell them what happened and ask if they think a repair is worth it.
