What things to look for in a beginner board??

Hi all!
I've been kiting for a couple of weeks!
I want to by my first landboard but I don't know what to look for!!
I know that long board are better for speed runs and short board for tricks... so I would like a medium length board.
The problem is that I have no idea of the actual length of the board!! what is small?? big???
Any other things I should check? I'd like to buy it second handed so if you can tell me what things I need to check would be great.
I fly a Ozone imp quattro 3.5m, I'm 11 st (70 Kg) and 67 inches (1.70 m).

If you have any specific model please advice.

THANK YOU!!!!

P.S.
Yesterday I did my FIRST JUMP (no board)! but I got scared at about 20cm from the ground and I let it go :-) but it still count as a jump, the kite was pulling strong!!!

I found a big wide board with stiff shocks good . I struggled on friends more advanced boards then found a big old board ( mbs Blade ) that made a big difference. My comp 16 has the same qualities.

I'm not sure what is on the new market that fits those qualities?

Kites: 2.5m Profoil , Quadrifoil XL kitesurfer, NPW 5 Danger.
Flexifoil: 1.7m Sting, 4.9m Blade 3, 9m Blade 2.
Flysurfer : 19m Speed 2 SA, 7m Pulse
Peter Lynn :18m Phantom, 15m Synergy, 10m Synergy, 1200 Farc, 460 Sarc, 130 Tarc, 5m Peel, 4.2m , 6.4, 8.5 C-Quads, 3.5 LS2 single skin.

Rides: Flexi / P.L. Frankin'Buggy , Shaped + straight skiis, sand skis, Coyote blades. Core 95 ATB. RKB R2 ATB .

Being a beginner, I have to say, wide is good. My GI board is much wider than my MBS board, and it is definitely more comfortable.

Looks like it'd need some bindings though.

Hey uince81,

I'm a complete noob at kite landboarding and have only been riding mountainboards (downhill) for about 5 months. That said, I have bought 3 different boards in 3 different ways in that short amount of time, and I have been riding (again downhill) around 3 times a week since I started. For your height and size (we are the same height, and you are about 1 stone lighter) I would suggest a board that is light and somewhat smaller than average. I ride an MBS Comp90 now, and I am much more comfortable with it than other bigger, heavier boards I've ridden.

If I were you, I would not buy a used board online without having tried out a similar one in person. You can get a good feel for a board by just strapping in and trying some small hops in place. You can even do this at the store if they have display models. You will also notice that some boards have a stiffer feel, while other have lots of flex and springyness (or pop) to help you jump.

Once you get your board, take a few runs without a kite down a soft grassy hill to get used to how the board behaves. That should help you feel more comfortable on it when it comes time to strap in with the kite.

I'll be interested to see how your skills develop, since we're getting into kite landboarding around the same time.

Good luck, be safe, and have fun!

How's it going? Did you end up getting anything?

I think a landboard will be my next purchase. I too know nothing about Landboards and need to learn basics. I am looking for a thread where this is discussed as well as a list of trustworthy brands.

A quick list of who and what:

A Wind Of Change (Kent)
Ground Industries

Coastal Wind Sports (Angus)
Flexifoil
Ground Industries
Scrub

Dakitez (Dino)
MBS
Scrub

DiscoverKiting (Eli)
Ground Industries

Wind Power Sports (Corey)
MBS

Apologies if I missed anyone.

In the UK and Europe, you can probably add KiteDeck and Trampa. While DEX (Design Extreme), doesn't specifically do boards, they do some nice (read spendy) partner work with others, complete with carbon decks and titanium hardware.

Sam

Yes I am! I got my second session on it yesterday. Winds weren't cooperating. They were bouncing from 8-25, but I still got about an hour of time in. It finally clicked. I started to be able to fly it like my 3M blaze. There were times where I had to really work it to keep it up - and times I had to be careful not to get dragged. I even got a couple kite loops in (when winds were lighter). Scary thing was the winds would die and kite would start to fall and I would try to work it to keep it up and when the kite got almost to ground wind would pick and up and it would take me for a ride!! That was scary, but the good thing was safeties were in back of my mind. I even unhooked myself one time cause I was scared I was gonna lofted more than I was ready for. Plus in those gusty conditions you don't know when the wind will die and drop you.

But all in all it was good. I got two self launches in and one self landing and one kinda controlled crash. I got experience unpacking and blowing kite up and laying out lines and was the first time I used my new harness ( THANKS ANGUS!!!!). And I got to pack the kite back up.

Even a bad day on a kite is a WAY better day than any day at the office right?!?!?!?!?

So top brands I need to be checking into are:

Ground Industries, Flexi, Scrub, MBS ?

I am guessing all these brands have several different styles of boards as they do kites? Which are the intro/intermediate models?

Ones I am looking at are: GI - AK 103 & Prodigy; Scrub - Monoshee & Akashi; MBS - Atom ??? Am I on right track or no?

I have only rode GI. AK103 is a nice forgiving board with skate trucks. I now ride the Flight 93 which has Bionic trucks and Talon bindings. Much more stable no adjustments, and the trucks feel the same every time. Also it is 10cm shorter so it spins easier.

Also ripsession kites posted in another thread (GI Nation) about a GI blowout sale
