I'm in the market for a landboard.

I'll take my time, but I'd like to get it in the next month or so.

My budget tops is $300, $200 would be nice.

I'm looking for a solid board suitable for beginners that can also possibly do for getting going on jumping, I've been jumping static for a while now and will likely try to pull jumps when the control gets good enough, weeks / months / years who knows how long it will take... But on the other hand a big old comfy board with good trucks would do me fine for a while...

I am 42, 160#, pretty fit for my age, and quite new to boardsports of any kind, the only time I went wakeboarding I got up first time everytime , tho it probably wont help much...

I have to deal with a lot of soft sand, tho, so I may need to rebuild my board into a bigfoot landboard. It seems the easiest way to do so is to bolt slightly longer axles onto the existing trucks and pick an axle size that works for granny scooter tires, some of which can work very well.

The landboard is the big thing, I do have some lowtide hardpack areas, it's just a little harder for me to get to. the bigfoot idea is an add-on question, and yes I know about the japanese bigfoot...

I know a lot of these threads go around, but any input / suggestions would be welcome and likely to be acted on as I can be kinda lazy.

[edit/] sorry forgot about what goes with a landboard... I have a couple different helmets already, and it seems to me impact shorts and knee pads are the next priority... How sold are folks on elbow pads and impact vests? [/edit]

From the bit I have experienced you are better off going to a buggy for soft-ish sand.

Nigel from here has a huge thing that roles but it sure doesn't fit your " decent learner starting jumper " needs.

I just paid $200 for an amazing board so your price point is reasonable.

yeah, but portability is a big concern. If I have a buggy I have to take it to one beach and leave it there. I might still build a basic bamboo gilligan's island special, but I'm not going to get a good one at this point.

I do have access to hard-pack so yes I think I've got a good budget going for an amazing board!

The bigfoot side of the post is more just hoping somebody out there has a good idea... not something I'll go for if I'm not happy with the plan.

I'm ready for a old cruiser if the money is right, however shipping to HK will mean that I have a weight limit of about 15 pounds shipped.

Lad's old MBS beast is perfect for me, but shipping would double if not triple the cost of a 28 pound board.

I don't want to buy flexifoil (those guys spend too much money on advertising), but it's maven 454's comment about the AK 103 bionic that concerns me...

Roleez are the wheels on the Japanese board which I've seen a few times now - my shop buddy in Shizuoka has one and I saw one out on Sunday, under a Pansh Blaze. Doesn't look like they edge at all

Roleez wheels you can buy separately from about US$30 each ... if you knew a guy who knows a guy, you could get a pair of channel trucks modded or fabbed up to fit the wheels - I've thought about doing that but it's too much effot :D

$60 each for the 30 cm wheels / hubs on the website, unless I'm missing something. OUCH! clicked around a bit more and started noticing the valve stem installed on the tire itself...

Kami, the Backyard Blue board has post bindings instead of Talons, and I suspect that they probably result in a more reasonable width. You could always ask Kent to compare them. And other than the width of the bindings (which are easy to replace) I love the GI board.

hey maven is that one of kent's ak 103s you have there in your sig? how do you like it?

It is indeed from Kent. I love the board, there are only two issues. The AK deck normally comes drilled for both skate trucks and bionic trucks, and Kent says that they've used both before with no issue, but apparently this time (I was the first one to get one) the holes for the bionic trucks are just slightly off. I had to take a file to the holes in the deck to get them to fit (Kent was going to check the other decks). My other issue, as Kamikuza mentioned further up in the thread, is that the Talon bindings result in my size 9 1/2 boot just barely fitting. As I use it, it does seem to be loosening up a bit, but there's no way to kick out if I feel like I'm going down.

I have to say though, that those two flaws are an absolute shame, because other than that it is fantastic. I like it a whole lot better than my MBS Atom (which, to be fair, is not exactly at the high end of the MBS scale). When I jump with the MBS on my feet, I feel like I've got a board strapped to my feet. When I jump on the GI board, it feels nice and springy. I do think that I'll end up getting a set of cubes for the bionic trucks that provide a little less turning resistance, but I'm going to wait until I have an order in for something else before I bother.

I'm an 8.5 us 42 eur with narrow feet so I'd likely be better, but no way to kick out sounds kinda bad.. but I love what you say about the springiness of the deck, and I hear the harder cubes are better to start with... Does it feel like you're going to be able to kick out as the bindings loosen up?

He was able to fit 10" tires onto the original rims, substantially floatier it looks like esp with a bit of air let out of the tires, but would that challenge the beads? Something like this might work for me, but I wonder how far I could push the size?

also wheel clearance becomes an issue, 16" trucks would help as well as gouging out the board, but I'd rather not start chopping the board unless I get a wooden one.

time to look for tires....

The Flexi Kava has what I believe are 10 inchers on it - they much bigger than the Scrub wheels which I'm sure are 8's ...

I'm hoping that it will loosen until I can kick out, but I might just swap the bindings with a different type. Unfortunate, because I actually like the Talon bindings. An 8.5 would probably fit without an issue, as long as you get the bindings set up correctly.
