Flying with your kids....excellent!!!

Well i must say the weather here has been very nice, not windy enough, but nice light breeze......

So for the first time this week i take my 12 year old daughter [who has never flown a kite in her life] out to the flying field and after a quick lesson in kite handling I lay out the SkyCountry Escape 3meter [earlier version or the Reflex] and away she goes!!! Now remember the wind is about 2-4mph at best so my daughter has to work the kite a bit to keep it loafted....tell yah it was pretty cool to see!!!!

Then i ask her if she wants to fly the Pansh Airlink 4.5.....sure she says [again the wind is the same and i figured it would be a good kite for this day anyways]...so i roll it out and away she goes...2 passes and she parks it, hands me the handles and says "Dad lets fly the Escape, this thing doesn't fly worth beans...". I just about pissed myself laughing!!!!

I must say that this has been one of the best times spent with my kid in a long time......moral of the story "take a kid to fly a kite and you will show them more than you realise!!!"

Couldn't agree more Tonka! My Son and I started kiting together back about 6 years ago. This was the first picture of me teaching him how to fly (probably me too).

My prides and joys.

This is Jared 2 years ago. He can fly whatever he can hold back these days. That is him on my buggy in my avatar too.

I wish Wexler was a little more afraid to grab a kite. He'll fly anything and everything these days. Real family affair. He is a team rider for Coastal Wind Sports and HQ powerkites.

it's funny you started this thread, i was trying to resist starting one myself at the risk of sounding too corny. but last saturday i had one of my best kiting days ever. nothing extreme, light to moderate winds simple static flying, but my son finally decided to pick up a kite!! and now he too is infected with this wind powered addiction. i would always bring him but he never showed much interest after i got the kite in the air. he would patiently sit and look so bored that i would feel guilty for bringing him. he never wanted to try, and the whole ground control thing wore thin pretty quickly. then all of a sudden he asks if he can unpack my p.3... holy smokes this kids been holdin out on me. so i ask him if he wants to try the beamer 1.4 i got from CSA and within seconds this guy is looping and diving like a pro. i couldn't fly because i was so impressed and happy to now have another activity to share and a partner to fly with...

That's a great age that I'm sure he will find it very exciting to pick up a kite. Kids are sponges and will absorb anything they get their hands on.

Great thread!

Thanks for sharing guys. My 5 y/o son enjoys flying with me, but loves the playground equipment even more. He's, still not yet ready to control 2 line kites yet, but it won't be long.

I have 2 boys - 12 and 6 yo. 12 yo Pasha has been boarding a bit.
I took him to NABX 2 times and SOBB this year.

Yeah I don't feel so guilty anymore when I am kiting with him ;)
Plus at this age they pick up way faster than me, and he has way more guts to jump and go faster
So he is actually an inspiration for me now to ride faster and try new things

To Tonka:
I have heard you are leaving soon. If you and your daughter are still here in Vancouver we should go together to Garry Point with kids one day.

As to Escape - it used to be a race kite and several years ago riders took good places riding them in Estonia's championship.

Flying with the kids is great. Our whole Family is really into it, My wife has her Beach Crusier (Virus Buggy with a Sail) My son 15 is not afraid of anything and the only thing holding him back is me. Somtimes he has bigger kites in the air than I do. My daughter (11) is really starting to get into it, She still uses a small Lynn buggy but I don't think that it will hold much longer and then she will want a full size buggy also.

There is one down side to havinf the whole family into kiting,

Wanted to share this one with you. Brock is young, he'll be 1 the first week of October and yet he must have felt compelled to steer the kite! He kept wanting to pull the bar in, I think it'll be hard to keep him off the ground.

Well being a single dad my 12 year old gets dragged (literally) out kiting almost every time the wind is blowing. There is the usual teenage complaining here and there but for the most part she ends up having fun.
She seems excited about learning how to kitesurf as am I, just need some warmer weather. With any luck im starting her off with some thing she will keep as she goes through life.

Mood: low winds here I come

[*] posted on 5-6-2010 at 08:17 PM

My son had his 8th b-day yesterday. Got him an Ozone 1.5m imp 3-line trainer winds were too strong today but died to around 6-8mph this evening. Let him give it a try but buildings in town really made for a bad wind shadow even I had to work hard to keep the kite in the sky. He really didn't want to be there from distraction of his other presents, but when he had the kite rippin' through the air I'll never forget the look on his face. A 1.5m kite sure motors across the window that's for sure.
