Dealing with "Joe Public" again!

Well the winds were up today, so I loaded up and headed for the nearest public park where I fly on any given windy day. I was all by myself for the first 45 minutes and then took a small drink break. While I was finishing up my drink and headed back to the kite and buggy, a car pulled up and I could see a black lab in the back seat. I thought " this could be interesting". I launched the kite and watched that the guy had the dog on a leash. I thought hey this is going to be ok after all. Then he walked to the other side of the field from where I was, about 100 yds away and let his dog off the leash.

I could not believe my eyes when he let the dog go, and we all knows what happened next. I parked the kite and decided to see what would happen next. The dog came bee lining right for me and then got all tangled in the kite and lines. Then when he was done there he proceeded right for my buggy and lifted his leg on my brand new front end. I was beside my self when the guy finally collected his dog and never said sorry or even acknowledged I was even there. I said loudly to him that maybe next time it would be a good idea to keep his dog on a leash when he is in a public park. Maybe I should have kept on flying, but I am a dog lover myself and did not want to harm the dog or myself so I opted to park it.

Gotta love "Joe public" sometimes!

If I see that guy again I will definitely. I know it's not the dogs fault that it's owner is an idiot.

It's just a shame that people just don't give a s&*t!

See you saturday lad!

you gotta love these idiot dog owners that say" oh hes just playing"--yes of course that would be true if the dogs owner was "attacked" but a stranger is a totally different story--if a dog ever gets on my kite when its parked, im going to launch it --it would be awesome to see someones dog flying around up there HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA--especially if it was an AIRedale tAIRrier--HAHAHAHAHA

I dislike dogs and I have to agree with ragden. I might launch if it gets close just to keep the kite out of reach, but I wouldn't want to launch if the dog might get hurt.

Sorry for hijack, but have to share.

This is a story about a buddy of mine and his dog, who loves kites. He LOVES to chase the kites, but doesnt know what to do when they hit the ground. Normally he just sits there and waits for it to launch so he can chase it again. Well, my buddy was flying a small fixed bridle kite, and was zipping it over the dogs head, getting him to chase it and jump after it. Was great fun. He would land the kite away from the dog, the dog would race towards it, he would launch, and the dog would jump. We took pictures and had a blast with it. Til the dog ACTUALLY caught the kite. He put two tiny punctures in the kite as he bit into it. No real harm done, but he landed and wrapped the kite shortly after. I am sure someone has the pictures, but man it was funny to watch.

Live and learn as they say.
I always try to stop it before it becomes a problem. Have had the same thing happen, someone brings a dog lets it off the leash, heads right for the kite ect. Just go out and head the dog of before he gets there, grab ahold if you can. Explain to the owner potential problems.

If that dosent work bite the owner in the juggular.

Inconsiderate dog owners suck. I was kite skiing a few winters ago and got really overpowered and blown down to the far end of the lake (near where some houses are). I'm scambling to secure my kite and keep away from the ice fishermen and snowmobiles when along comes a frisky dog. First he grabs one of my gloves which was on the ground as I had taken it off to start wrapping the lines up and he starts running around my kite to avoid me catching him and getting my glove. Next thing you know he's tangled in the bridle and he drops the glove and starts mouthing at the lines to get himself free. I am a dog lover but if there weren't houses and onlookers around I think I would have aggressively subbued the dog.

So there I am trying to anchor an overpowered kite and gently coax a dog to stop biting at my lines and get out of my bridle all the while looking around to try to figure out whose dog this is and why they aren't helping. When I finally managed to get the dogs legs free he picks up my glove again and runs off. Thankfully the kite didn't drag the dog down the lake and thankfully the bridle lines weren't chewed through. All I lost that day was my temper, my glove and my respect for careless dog owners.

Last time I was in San Diego, I was flying in just barely enough wind, so occasionally, the kite would come out of the air regardless of what I did. And some idiot dog owner was encouraging his dog to go after the kite while it was in the air. All I could do was hope that the wind didn't die.

My favorite is the family who brings their dog to a kite festival. Everyone knows that kites and dogs don't mix. Luckily for Don (kitejumper) and me the family that brought their Collie to the Annual Cleveland Kite Festival at Edgewater Park had the common sense to keep the dog on a leash on a stake, but that didn't stop it from yelping at everything that moved in the sky. :puzzled:

The dog's owner will remain anonymous, unless he wants to speak up and claim it.
I am not sure what has happened to him. I have some guesses, but nothing confirmed. Unfortunatley, he will not be at the Bash this time because of another committment. :(

But you have to admit, they make for some freaking hilarious stories!
Especially yours, B-Roc!

Of course I'm sure it wouldn't be so funny if it had happened to me.
But the dog playing keep-away with your glove... comedy gold!

I can laugh about it now :singing: I know it must have been funny to observe some dope in ski boots chasing a dog around a kite on ice and snow but at the time I was just like :ticking: especially when he started mouthing at my bridle :o all I was thinking was that it there weren't houses and people around, I would have taken that dog out with a ski.

dogs around here have not presented a problem---owners have them on leashes for the most part and if unleashed, they tend to stay away--one time a dog started running towards my parked kite and i launched it when he was still 50 yards away and he lost interest and ran away.......

Thinking back now, I probably would have been better off leaving the kite in the air till the idiot collected his dog. This has really brought out some good stories. It is not the first time I have encountered dogs there or anywhere else, just this one was the largest dog and the dumbest owner!

He got what he deserved, he had to get in his car to catch up with the dog as it ran to the other side of the park. I did get the last laugh!
Thanks to all who have participated in this thread, and keep the good stories coming! Let's see who has the best story!
