What lb rope should I use for the strop I'm making?

I prefer something wth a separate cover for a strop. As a single braid, Amsteel is great for splicing loops and such, but if you're running it through a sheave or even letting it run right over a speader hook or such there's no protection from friction and abrasion.

1/4" spectra double braid (spectra core with poly sheath) would be good. Actually, even a straight polyester double braid will be fine if it's marine grade. No hardware store stuff, please.

Yep, I use sheathed running line from the local West Marine. Inexpensive enough to replace when needed.

don't get a very nice strop unless you have a pulley or roller on your harness... My strops wear out fast, even 6mm spectra wears out after a while when running through a hook. Cheaper stuff wears out in a few hours, the good stuff can take up to 20 hours to wear out. it all depends on how much you load it up and how much you pull it through the hook.

that said, you do need good line... I received a polypropelene (the yellow single braid cheapo hardware store stuff) strop with a kite I purchased recently, not sure what the seller was thinking, I chose to regard it as a joke as everything else was excellent and threw it out. anything braided on the outside with a interior core will do, from climbing accessory cord to the yachting line mentioned above.

the abrasion resistance is more important than the strength, tho. at least 500 pounds will do.

fixed bridles, flying static, been two years now... ??? folks must be wondering....

sting 1.7, dp power 2.5, crossfire 3.2, ace 5, blade iv 6.5, ace 8, ace 12...

also a couple of arcs, 12 syn and 12 phanny, but i\'m not yet up to speed on them.

FWIW:

Amsteel II & Amsteel II Plus are available in covered flavors, where there is a braided polyester cover over the Dyneema core. The Plus variant add a Samthane coating to further enhance abrasion resistance.

Ozone makes some nice strop lines, sold as an accessory with existing loops on the end ready for larksheading. Around $7 at the retailer of your choice.

Poweer/Knolee,

Your strops are on the way....................

Power,

youve got a 10' piece of of 5mm (3/16"/5400 lbs break strength) Amsteel and a 3 foot section of sailing line (3/16" and rated at 2000lb break strength)

Knolee,

You have the same line, both pieces are in 3 foot sections............................

the green sailing sheet or line is coated with a core...the Amsteel is woven.............you decide which on you like better for strops...............................i/.e wear resistance and smoothness thru your hook................with the extra Amsteel you can redo your center line on your Nemisis rig when its time..........................
