iphone app

so most iphone users should know about this little app:

Wind Meter

i was a bit reluctant to spend the .99 for it since most apps are sometimes just humor. ie the Finger Scan / Weight Scale.
i decided that i'd would just bit the bullet.
ive never owned a wind meter before, i never need one ... i can just pick my kite size and be okay with it and if its too much size down.

i can see the novelty in a wind meter just to know the wind speed for that moment / day. However i cant justify spending $59.00 on one, so the .99 was the better deal.

does it work?
honestly yes, I first tried to blow on it and it read 2km. it doesnt read heater heat though. lol.
i used this a park where Weather Network said 20km and app by the water said 21km. so its close
lastly, it was a still winter dark bike ride home so i had my bike GPS on and drove one handed to see a reading. Garmin GPS 605 said 25.5 km and the iphone read 24 km

i have no affiliation with the developer but if you want a Wind Meter, get the app.

That was my understanding as well, that it reads the amount of "ambient noise" created by the wind and calculates the speed. Sounds like its pretty accurate to boot. I never got it, but for a buck, why not?

Yes it reads the microphone. Very clever. But not accurate at all, at least for me. I deleted mine within hours. To be fair, my iPhone is always in some skin enclosure, and bits of sand are always in a near corner or crevice of the microphone opening, so the resulting turbulence was probably throwing it off. Sand is near everywhere in my life!

But i do use the iPhone for reading the local WeatherFlow station via the 'net. They are one of the feeds for iKiteSurf.com. They have an app for using the GPS to log into the nearest station and read near-real-time velocity and direction plus an historic graph. Our local station fortunately overlooks our beach (thank you WeatherFlow!).

Yeah I'm getting pretty good at sensing the wind myself. I know I can launch my Reactor 10.8 when my t-shirt ruffles a certain way in the breeze. But when I am doing a kite review or comparison and make certain claims about wind ranges, I like to be able to point to a reference

Wind Finder

so far the setup is better than WG / WA

nicer cleaner look and you can scroll through a few days worth of forecast.

it use a combination of Weather Stations from WG / WA even the some of the paid ones are now here FREE

the app is free too
