knee and elbow pads - what kind?

I'm going to snag some elbow and knee pads for my upcoming trip to NABX and I'm wondering what kind work best for buggying.

I've had roller blading pads, downhill biking armour and skateboarding pads, in the past, and have found that some protective gear works better for a specific sport than others.

So what have you found to work well for buggying and why-so?

Someone mentions HillBilly gear whenever this topic comes up. I've got some 661 gear which is good but ATM I'm using moto-x elbow guards and skating kneepads ...

I mostly use 661 elbow/forearm guards, my old paintball gloves, and a motocross helmet. For hard surface riding (or when I start going faster) I also have moose knee/shin guards and a 661 core saver. The jury is kind of out on the core saver as it is kind of bulky and I haven't got the least cumbersome seat harness ever made.

hey whatever works.
Airin- for the price, those don't look bad although the elbow/forearms will probably not be as flexible as you would like. There is a size small 661 pressure suit on e-bay right now with no bids for $48 that might be worth a look. It would need a kidney belt sewn on to it, but those things are like $160 plus new. Of course this is coming from the guy with a kites worth of pads and crap that never get used:smilegrin:

IMO for the landboard vert skating pads are your best bet cos they're designed for body falling impact and sliding rather than impact from flying stuff.
My old vert gear knee pads had a donut in the padding, designed to go around the patella to take impacts off that area ... a few companies do that but it's subjective.
Elbow pads - just make sure the buggers don't move. I've got a slightly knackered and sensitive left elbow so I like a lot of padding.
And IMO again you need a hard ABS cap to slid cleanly - soft pads may shred ... depends on your surface I guess.
Buggy riders probably have different needs though :D

Don't forget a decent helmet too!

For the UK, this is a pretty good store ... ship internationally at reasonable rates too :)

I use 661 gear too. Its comfy and effective. You occaisionally get dodgy build quality though - in terms of stitching etc. I dont think I'm particularly rough on it or anything.

Yeah, the stitching holding the velcro on my 661 kneepads has come loose at the corners and I don't think I've been that hard on it.

Sold my soul to the devil logo (Dainese)...

Comfy, well made, and storm trooper chic. Thoughtful details like the use of perforated foam that actually circulates air.

Prices generally require an oxygen tank and a bag of feathers for when sticker shock renders you unconscious and you fall over.

That said, if you shop really, really hard you can snag gear anywhere from 30%-50% off the going, sometimes even 70% when you find yourself howling under a blue moon.

New models mean non-current models go for subterranean discounts. When Dainese gear goes on sale/clearance flags goes up, lights flash, and alarms signal on various forums... most notably motorcycle related.

Airin, whatever you get, make sure it is comftable for you when you are seated (pads will be compressed and elastic straps at extension) for extended periods in the buggy.

ATB,
Sam

Screamin' deal. I have the 661 core saver which I picked almost new for $50, but it is really about a size too big for me. Might have to get one of these.

So THAT's what a 'pressure suit' is?!

Sheesh, a bit over the top for this powderpuff gal. ;-)

I'm thinking to start out with the 661 elbow and knee pads.....

So do the pads have to had a hard shell or can they be multi layer of neoprene like the 661 Veggie Wraps?

And we're talking for buggying here...

I guess all that really matters is that it's comfortable enough that you'll wear it and it is something besides skin hitting a hard, abrasive surface at speed when things go wrong.

I like the reinforced knee that protects the kneecap from the sides as well as from direct impacts. Check out these links for some good sale prices on 661, Race Face, and Troy Lee. I always end up looking on motocross and extreme biking sites for gear.
