360's and more on a snowboard

Looking for advise on throwing 360's and working up to bigger and better things.

I'm snowkiting with a snowboard on a 12m frenzy. Which direction would I be best off spinning?

Backside seems like I'd only have to get 270 degrees and be able to land easily, where as frontside seems like i'd have to get at least 360 around maybe even 450 because of the downwind pull.

Also, when jumping, is there anything I can do to avoid getting yanked a good distance down wind? Seems like right when I leave the ground I swing hard and downwind a good 10+ feet.

Is this always the case? The second I'm airborn I fully redirect, but so far it's always the most comfortable to do a 90 degree turn and land heading downwind until the kite fully redirects

Getting pulled downwind doesn't really have much to do with how you redirect the kite, unless of course you're doing a kite loop and the shooting it to the zenith. It has to do more with the kite. Some kites have very vertical lift and others have more side pull.

Hi Man

How high are you going when you jump?
The Frenzy should redirect quick enough.
It kind of sounds like you aren't edging hard enough before you send the kite.
Also how hardare you sending it? ie from 1:00 to 11:00 or 2:00 to 10:00, if you understand what I mean.

Dont let the kite pull you off to early. Edge hard against the kite before you pop. Direct the kite to 12 not past it.
Getting good high jumps/ compaired to downwind jumps is a matter of timing more then anything. Most guys have the problem of sending the kite to far back. This will wank you off the ground but then youll swing back under the kite. make sure you send it to 12.

I'd assume for that you'd need to be right powered up then too?

Hey

Yeah, if you have good wind for the kite you are using you won't have to send the kite as hard. That way it's easier to redirect and you will be able to keep the kite at 12:00 for some float before finishing the redirect to land.
Every kite will be a little different but I find my best jumps are from 1:00 to 11:00 and back or vise versa. That sends me straight up without the pendulem effect Renegade is talking about. You will always go down wind a bit, but not rocketing down wind a long ways.
Every kite will react a bit different though. It depends on the turning speed of the kite, but as you redirect more you will get pulled up and sideways more as opposed to just up.
Also the faster you are going before the redirect will help.

If you can load and pop properly, you will not get carried downwind as far. The key is your load, pop, and release. Best thing I can say, is edge hard against the kite, then flatten out your board just a hair, then turn hard against it up wind. While doing this, send the kite to noon, or not quite to noon and pull in the bar. When done properly, you will actually maintain your line and not go downwind as much. You will also get quite a bit more height out of your jump. If you are edging to your right, try only sending the kite to 1 o'clock. If you are going to your left, 11 o'clock. This takes some practice to get down. Give it a shot and let us know how it works for ya. :)

If you start on heelside and end on heel side it a 360 either way you spin.
You'll find your favorite 360 to do just by what feels right...
I like to fast 540's from toeside for example... Just feels right...

I think previously I've been sending the kite way too far. I always thought the farther the better so I was probably sending it 10 to 2. Also I've never really thought that much about how hard I was edging.

A bit of a problem here in the tundra of North Dakota is that holding an edge is very difficult since it's the snow is very drifted and a bit icy.

Next time I get out I'll try 11 to 1, and see what that does for me.

Manitoulin are you saying to only send the kite to 12 and pop and keep it at 12? Or send it from 11 to 1 and bring it back to 12 but not redirect until I'm coming down.

I'm much less experienced than all of you, so it seems like even when I'm getting 10ft+ of air that I still don't have very much time to do all of this in the air. Any tips?

If you load, pop, and release properly, you wont need to send the kite at all to get a small amount of air time. I can normally get 2-3 feet of air just from pop and release. Thats without even pulling in on the bar. Pull in the bar, and get a few more feet. Send it back to noon, and get more... :) Dont really need to send it beyond noon...

points to add into the rotations.

set up for a jump(load edge, send kite, pull it).. always the same even if its a transition air.

tuck in , tight like ball, knees up... lead with your head look over front shoulder for a back roll and keep looking to spot a landing. the LOOK and HEAD control are the elements to get you around. the hardest part for me is adding the redirect with in the rotation. squeezing the redirect hand as soon as you look worked for me for a reminder.
you are going end up down wind a little but if you have good speed you get the line right back.

oh yeah land to your strong side your developed reflexes will almost insure a landing. as long as you see it!

as i did more and relaxed more ..it really is only a matter of looking with head rotation in the direction you want.

it just a jump with style

Hi

"Manitoulin are you saying to only send the kite to 12 and pop and keep it at 12? Or send it from 11 to 1 and bring it back to 12 but not redirect until I'm coming down."

I usually go to 1 (from 11) and redirect back towards 11. If I'm up high enough I redirect to 12 and keep the kite there for 1 or 2 seconds (maybe 3 once and again) then redirect in the directon I want to go in.
Usually when I get that high on ice it's by accident and I'll settle for leaving the kite at 12 and dropping slowly down though.
10 feet will be high enough to do most of this. Most of it wll come with practice. Also once you start going up instead of sideways you should have more time to move the kite around and to experiance floating.
I've been kiting 4 years and some days I can make jumps work all day and other days I just get dragged around and dropped. So all I can say is practice, practice, practice.
Hope all the info helps.
Fly safe.
