What to expect NABX 2010

I got a great letter from Tom Podzimek and he is allowing me to share it here:

On Fri, Mar 5, 2010 at 10:39 AM, Tom Podzimek wrote:

Hi Dean,

I am flying in on Sunday evening and I have to leave Friday morning. This is my first time so I really don't know what to expect.I have a couple of kites and a landboard but no buggy. I'm really interested in learning everything I can while I'm there.

One thing I've noticed is that there is no itinerary or agenda that has been posted.

For first timers this can lead to a lot of questions...such as:

Where do you sign in?

The big white tent.

What time?

8:30 to 10:00 12:00 to 13:00 15:00 to 17:00

What day?

Every Day.

When do events happen?

When the wind allows.

Food?

Yes, and lots of it, as well as ice.

Some questions omitted due to monitoring by outside forces, please be aware this is a public forum and it can be read by anyone, contact me privately for explanation.

Free time flying?

Always.

Is there orientation?

There will be clinics and Race Meetings. It is wise to attend a race meeting even if you don't plan on racing.

Also note: This forum is excellent for answers, if you don't see it you can ask me, i will check email every day until the 22nd, then sporadically after that on my phone. If i don't know the answer, there is a real good chance i know who does. deanjordan (at) g mail dot com (i do not use the U2U on here).

There will be a white board with a tentative schedule on it. Scott Skinner is the Team Leader for Registration this year. See Jose to win the buggy!

See Blake Pelton for racing.

Thanks Tom for writing me, and reminding me that we always have new folks and welcome to all new folks here, you've come to the right place. You will find many helpful peeps at our event. This year there will be more combined Kite Traction Knowledge at our event than probably anywhere on the planet this year. If you are wondering if you should attend, don't wonder, register now, and come join us!

AoxomoxoA awaits~!

One thing for newbies to know about NABX is that it is not a spectator event - although you will be able to see some pretty awesome stuff. What I mean by that is that the event is not set up to where you will be sitting along the sidelines watching other people impress you. Instead, NABX is a participation event, meaning that you are more than welcome - and mostly encouraged to come ride, meet, mingle, interact with everyone there. The lakebed is HOOJ so even if there are scheduled racing going on, there is still plenty of room for everyone to ride and enjoy the lake bed at the same time (obviously off to the side or away from the racing circuits). Still, if mother nature allows, you can ride from sun-up to sun-down...and even longer should you want to do so.

Don't worry about your skills (or lack of) as there are no judges at NABX. We all had to start sometime so if this is your 100'th event, or your very first --- if you have been buggying for years, or if this is your first time -- if you are an experienced kite flyer/pilot, or you are brand new to kiting in general - YOU ARE ALL WELCOME!!!

If you are brand new to the sport, there will be plenty of friendly and very helpful people there to show you the ropes and help expand your skills. If there is a kite you want to try out, there will probably be someone there that would be willing to let you take their baby on a quick flight. If you are having troubles with anything or everything, there will be people there that will be happy to help you get things figured out.

If you want to come, sit on your tush and have people there work to specifically entertain you - well....you may be better off going to a sporting event like the NBA, NFL, or the movies... or otherwise.

If you have a passion for kiting, specifically power kiting and buggying then NABX is an event you will not want to miss out on.

Hope that helps - see ya'll on the playa!!!

What will Mr. Lynn be up to?
Will he just be riding, hanging out, lecturing, exhibiting, holding court, hoisting a few?
What I mean to say, can one just hang around to hear and see what he has to show or say (if anything)?

Of course. :) Mr. Lynn is a wealth of knowledge that is just unimaginable. Hopefully he will be riding with all of us. Watch out though, he plays a very mean game of buggy tag!!!
