That's just crazy. I've never listened to my ipod in the buggy but have thought about it. I never seem to be anywhere all by myself and don't want the music in the way of conversation with my buddies. Beyond that, I love listening to the sound of the wheels turning, the shells popping, and the lines singing. Music to my ears.

Condolences to the deceased's family. Not on the list of probable ways to end it.

From elsewhere:

  • Deceased jogger: married and had two children.
  • The Lancair IV is a very high end "kit plane" and generally is built and flown under experimental aircraft rules. It's the fastest single engine piston powered general aviation aircraft, and a buildup of one of the kits runs in the $300K - $600K range, depending on how much "help" the owner gets with the "pilot built experimental aircraft".

Kind of curious as to time of day this happened. Unless the the beach was a ghost town, would have expected the jogger to have been alerted by everyone on the beach going "ape#@%$#!" and pointing at the sky.

Definitely feel sorry for the family.

ATB,
sam

This is just another perfect example of the fact that when your time is up and it is time to go....it's time to go. Thoughts and prayers for his family.

plane dropped @ 6:10pm,

on monday a windsurfer and i were just wrapping up at the south end on a west wind. it was 8 + miles north from where we were (on Armada PD) solid beach all the way about mid tide. fairly sparse beach goers. doubtful if anyone was close enough to make a difference. no one on our end maybe a crowd of 2 couples in an hour.

I was jacked in on the water ....tool/undertow. beautiful sunset.

very sad for his family .

yes jacked in 99% of the time on land , 50% of the time on the water

Isn't it the pilots responsibility to maintain his aircraft? I would assume an oil leak followed by the propeller falling off may be due to either the assembly of the kit or poor maintenance. That and this beautiful quote -

"I've got a lot of issues going on right now," he said. "I've got a plane that's all torn up. And I've got a young man that I killed."

Notice the order of importance.

funny flexiblade...I saw the same thing in his quote. Maybe he did not mean it to come across that way but it sure did. The dead man appears just an afterthought. Sad.

I would say that was the importance going through the pilots head when he was coming down on the beach. he obviously had to see the guy on the beach, so rather ditch the plane in the water ... just hit the guy.

IIRC that the FAA has to certify the aircraft for it to be in the experimental class ... and from what I remember my buddy here who had a plane told me, he couldn't work on his own plane - the point being to avoid the "she'll be right" accidents.

Maybe it was said last for emphasis, so it rings in the consciousness after he's finished speaking :puzzled:

Either way ... sucks :( RIP and best wishes to family and friends ...

Yea it makes you wonder.

So many pilots die trying to avoid places and people and this one headed for the beach and not the water?

Anyway, I'd have to have some long buggy stretch to play music. If I could buggy.

Crikey... please let's not go here. This is unfortunately a "juicy" stories and news services are posting things to the web as fast as they can. Unfortunately, that means things are going to be skewed one way or another depending on when you read one source or another.

FWIW:
"The windshield was covered with oil that’s why pilot couldn't see Robert Gary Jones as he landed."

Oil on the windshield? Near sunset?

As for the quote.... people a lot more experienced in front of the press, under a whole lot less stress have said things with a much higher idiocy quotient. Hell.... they have yearly "awards" for just that.

You just walked away from an aircraft failure... you're alright and your passenger is alright. Then after the fact, someone tells you that you killed someone..... how mindf*cked are you at that point?

ATB,
Sam

P.S. Not directed at you Dino.... just sayin'

It's much safer glide-landing a plane on ground that it is trying to crash-land in water, despite what you see in the movies ...

I almost always have my iphone with me in the buggy, but i never listen to music. I've thought about it, but i like hearing the buggy as she rolls along, and the singing of the lines.

Sad story indeed. Least it was quick from the runners point of view. He never knew, saw, or heard anything.. Just some cool tunes and whatever comes next. As for ways to go, I can think of worse...
