What size to take?

Off to Thailand tomorrow night ...
Toby from kiteforum.com is over there for the PKRA comp and has said that the winds been building to 20 knots in the afternoon ... I'm trying to think if I should take the Syn 19 & 15 or 15 & 12 :puzzled:

20 knots is right in the middle of the 19m range for my weight according to the arc calculator ... the board I'm taking is my North Sumo 155x41 ...

Yeah... I got a kite. Or two...

Hey Kam, if I remember right, aren't you over 220lbs???

Regardless, I'm about 212 without my gear so with the wetsuit and harness, I'm probably closer to 220lbs. I flew my 19m VII in winds that were averaging about 17mph with gusts to 21mph...that was a nice power range for me.

...so, I would say, definitely bring the 19. I think the over size would depend on how high it's going. If it's consistently blowing over 25-26, I would bring the 12, otherwise bring the 15 as well.

Yes, over 220 :( but I'm working on it ;)
... could I get away with JUST the 15? or JUST the 19?
Remember, I've only really had 1/2 a season on the water ...!

We have similar body weight and your skill set isn't alot better than mine it sounds like. At 20 knots, I'd be in nervous territory with the 19 especially if it edges up another couple knots. With the 15 you would still be ok but well powered IMHO. AJ and Phreerider make my mouth drop open about once a week with the kites they take out. They aren't in the learning phase right now. I hope to be there someday but not even close at this point.

20 knots is about 10m/s and I'm nervous on the 5m Rebble  I think I might just take the 15 for less airport stress and take it easy on the beach ... I get good jollies and thoroughly enjoy body dragging FFS

make sure there's no junk in the water if you're body dragging. you know like rocks, old docs, or sharks ;)

I'm 220 and I'd probably go with a light wind kite that will be powered and one that will server for for higer than average winds, but it really depends on the condition there and how gusty it is. And of course if you want to sit on the beach in the light or heavy wind ;) For 20, I'd bring a my 12 which is more or less powered enuf from 15 to 25 and my 10 which would take me to 30. Over that, borrow, beg, hold on tight, or drink margaritas!

I guess that maps over to just a bit less than a 19 and a bit less than a 15 ;)

Huh, seems I misread the arc calculator somehow ... 20 knots is now the UPPER range for the 19 Syn so I guess it's the 15 and 12 going :o

Too late  I took the 15 and 12 ... arrived in Thailand like 5am, 3 hour taxi ride to Hua Hin ... this afternoon was 20knots no worries out there but too tired to do anything but "Oh look the beach lovely where's the BurgerKing?"

:D
