LandBoard Comp
Well folks, myself and one of my teammates got to talking about the need for more of these type of competitions. We might even have enough riders to
throw a local competition (about 10, but I am the only chica argh!) Well, a beer or two later while sitting on the playa at NABX we decided that we
really want to throw a national comp. We already have preliminary sponsorship from a major landboard company and a powerkite company, possibly even a
microbrewer! We also have preliminary approval on a large grass field with reliable winds.
The question is: If we set up a landboarding competition in Colorado, would anyone come to it?
Let me know, cause I would love to do this, but... I am not going to go balls to the wall on organizing if only our local folks will show up.

we were thinking fall time frame. That way we are not really interfering with snowkiting or kiteboarding seasons. and it gives everyone enough time
to get some riding in before hand. Then again I am open to suggestions or general consensus to change.

in the fall the wind drops off here,(South east US) except for hurricanes
local wind is your best direction. weather history for the spot chosen is a good start.
nice to have something going in US .. i think ELI_USA , may have gotten a local comp going somewhere in the NW.. the details escape me. anyway
keep us posted

I should also say for all of the budding landboarders/fliers out there, you should plan on coming. We want to have not only the pro/amatuer
divisions... but we are thinking about having a 'best in show' award or something like it. Essentially this would go to the person that is the
biggest crowd pleaser, not necessarily the best rider. (i.e. showing up in a chicken suit and flying gets you bonus points)
This would be a non-profit event, but to cover the cost of beer/insurance/t-shirt swag/etc... the cost is estimated at 20-25$ to register/ride.
Myself and the other planner really don't want this to cost any more then that, so we would do our best to keep it below that.
For the city to give us the field (a massive soccer complex) we do need to restrict access to riders in the comp. For those of you that have never
competed this doesn't mean that flying is only restricted to people competing. We just need to get waivers and restrict access to those that would be
with our group. (Likewise if the brewery is donating beer we have to restrict it to our group only so we fit under some 'personal liquor at a
picnic' law or whatever)
Big thing is, if I can get 20 people interested in coming that are not locals (I am going to strong arm them into coming HA! ), the event will def be
on. I will keep everyone updated, I just really don't want to let this go since we have the perfect trifecta of approval/sponsorship/location, we
just need riders! I even have 3 professional photographers that owe me a big favor and will be there to give you guys promo work (FOR FREE!!) if you
ever wanted a sweet-ass photo of you doing your thing.

OOOH!!! we can always use more sponsors!
And I am loving all of the response so far.
If it was in the fall, what would be a good time frame sept/oct? I am thinking tentatively the third weekend in September. consensus says?

Only if I can compete in the ladies division so I'm guaranteed at least a 2nd place finish.
I won't be able to come. Travelling for kiting events isn't in the family budget.
Besides, even if I competed in the ladies comp, they'd probably give all the medals to you and some walk on 12 year olds - leaving me shamed for years
to come. :o
I'm a much better kiter on the internet than in person. :wow:

If you need an insurance carrier, I have one that does specialized sporting events. In this case they would use the buying power of skateboard parks
to keep it reasonable, same as they did for me for JIBE

PHREE - balls. Balls. BALLS!
acampbell - thanks for the info!
carltb - And ideally there would be more then a trophy for winning. I am not sure about how large the purse would be for placing. Part of that
would depend on how many folks register to compete and also on the sponsors etc... Of course I will keep everyone updated on each bit of info.
to all - any suggestions on a name for this comp?

Flash,
I'm definetly in and will try to bring as many as possible from Southern Colorado. Were you the one running registration at the Dillon Open? Also we
locals should plan a trip to the Great Sand Dunes for a weekend of camping and flying.
ps. I really enjoy your enthusiasm for the sport

I am writing this after a 40 min 'flash' session at the park riding and eating grass.
flashballs.... I love it. I might have to transfer over my vow to continue wearing a skirt while in a buggy (did for all of NABX) to wearing one
while on my L.Board.
brplatz - trust me... everyone should come. I am just sad on a landboard I
still love it tho!!
g-force - Yes I was the one running registration. (ours will be a little different) and funny you should say that, I just tried to do a Dunes trip
and was skunked!! I am definitely up for some time farting around flying there. Oh and by the way colorado folks, I am running the powerkite field
at the Fort Collins kite fest on may 1st, you should come bug me... might walk away with some fresh beer. (Just mention you are a PKF member)
UPDATE On SPONSORSHIP:
MBS has fully signed on to not only provide us with a race tent, advertising, etc... etc... but also decks and swag to hand out for raffle/winners.
HQ Powerkites might sponsor the event as the headliner, this is still under negotiations.
RipSessions has also thrown in their hat to give us some loving. tee hee
Into The Wind, our local kite store has made an offer to sponsor
Colorado All Board Sports is being courted for some sponsorship, they said they would if we can get riders to come to the event.
Some other buenos:
I have to double check with the brewery, but we would have at least one keg.
3 Pro photographers will be on hand to take photos. All photos of individual riders will belong to the rider to use at their discretion. (FOR FREE)
we have reached out to IKO and PASA regarding a Kite LAND boarding cert, this event might also do a double duty for anyone wanting to become a cert'd
instructor. (keep your fingers crossed)
And last but not least: anyone have suggestions on a name or a graphic? I can think of a thousand things, but I really want this to be OUR comp, not
just the brainchild of me and my two partners. Keep up the input etc... I am going to try and use everything you guys throw out there, but remember
just like any other event, if you don't speak up and say it, we will just go with what comes to mind.
WOO! alright time to go sleep and dream of getting spanked on my board.

I think this is a great idea. Thank you for taking the initiative!
Have you considered creating a Facebook group for the event?
Also, it seems the Front Range would benefit from some sort of regularly scheduled power-kiting meetup.... maybe once a month. Perhaps your event
could be the Genesis for that - a series of training sessions leading up to the event?

2. A def date - still thinking the third week of september...
3. Confirmation on the location. (this weekend we are going to go out and check out a few others just in case)
