Twister II

Hi I am new to the forum but not to power kites. I have had many trainers and have been flying for two years. I really want a kite that will lift me and that I can jump with. I have narrowed it down to the Twister II. The only problem is I can't decide if I want the 4.1 or a larger size because I want to be able to grow into it. Can this kite lift a 175lb. man in 15 winds? How much wind does it need to start lifting? Is it a good kite for jumping? Can someone who has the kite fill me in on the details? Thanks!!!

I take it you are in the 175 lb neighborhood?

What are the winds like usually in your area? Calmer winds will require a larger kite...but that is usually better anyway. A 4.1 would be minimum. The winds will dictate where you should try. DePower is always an option, though more expensive.

The 5.6 will be a much better choice . The trick is not to take it out in too much wind . Start off with a light wind until you have complete control of it.

A 4.1 is a bit too small to provide any decent float without flying the kite just right. The 5.6 will give you more canopy and that is good. If you respect it!!!!!!

I toally agree with the float comment having flown both, but the 5.6 is a BIG kite. In 15mph, don't under estimate it, it's quite dangerous... oh yeah we're talking about jumping... as the 4.7 in 15mph winds can easily lift my 220# way high into the air. So the 5.6 is certianly a kite that needs some respect and caution in moderate winds.

So you have both colors in a sock?

5.6....nothing smaller for jumping IMHO

I have the 5.6 and its beautiful in the blue/gray/black

DEFINATELY respect that kite and she'll treat you well. I weigh around 200 and it lifts me quite well in about 13+ mph. The reason I say nothing smaller is: I've flown a 4.1 and the 5.6 and tried jumping with both. They will both get you up there but I've noticed the 5.6 sets me down a LOT easier than that 4.1 does. The 5.6 has MUCH more float. Spend the little extra and get the 5.6

Oh yeah, one more thing....

I think that I am going to buy a new twister but thank you for the offer. The wind is 10-15mph here in chicago. Would that be enough to lift me? Also i am wondering if I should just go with the 4.1 because the winds do get to 25mph on a regular occasion and that would be too much for a 5.6.

25 is too much for the 5.6 (i have the battle scars to prove it)

10 mph and it pulls like a TRUCK...really comes alive around 12 for me but everyone is different so take it out around 8-10 till you have a good feel for it, then slowly ramp it up

This is why we all have so many kites. When someone only has one kite the conditions need to be just right in order to fly that day. When you have at least 2 kites it opens up your flying capabilities hooj.

Well thats my dilemma. Just being able to get a kite this expenisve was a battle. That is why I am looking for an allaround kite for all conditions. even in 10mph winds the 4.1 will still pull though, right? (Like enough to scud) I can only get one kite so if the 4.1 is still jumpable and can be flown in a wide variety of conditions, it may be my only choice. Are the landing so hard that it is not even worth jumping? And for someone with this kite: how high of winds for jumping, how high do you go, how hard are the landings?

Sorry for all the questions but these answers are great!

You can jump with any kite, the problem is the landing really. Anything lower than 5m Ive hit the ground hard. (not worth it in my book) Others may disagree, just my personal exp :)

The 4.1 will get you scudding but if you are looking to jump you may want to save a little more $$ and go for the 5.6....worth it in the long run....I have a 5.6 that I may be selling soon

i love my 5.6
---but i weigh 220.....50lbs lighter, and the 5.6 would get a lot less use

my buddy is 165, and his 4.1 treats him like my 5.6 treats me.... 4.1 is prolly a better option for you at this point... the 5.6 will jump better, but less useable winds... tough call bro.... either way, you landed on a good kite, and it will serve you well!

at 110lbs... the 4.1 will be plenty of kite!

you will get awesome jumps, in fairly decent winds, and you will get lots of use out of this kite... now and down the road

good choice!

Just my 2 cents -- I've just started power kiting a month ago... i have about 6 or 7 sessions in, and my most recent session was a blast, with the same kite.

I had it at it's zenith, and the winds were probably 15~20 and gusty... Well, a gust hit the kite at it's zenith, and it didn't hesitate to lift me 3ft off the ground and set me back down softly. I didn't even attempt to do a pendulum jump or any kind of jump. It has also lifted me slightly before, but not as high as it's most recent time.

It does indeed pull like a truck, as others have stated. Most sessions I have don't last too long, because it tires me out quickly due to the massive amount of pull this thing has. Overall, I LOVE the kite, although I'm debating on a Hornet 1.5m to be able to learn more flying techniques WITHOUT scudding so much all the time and getting my butt handed to me by a freakin kite..

Report back with how you like it -- I have a thread in the reviews section about my 4.1

all the best bro

Just be really cautios, please. Just read from someone over here, getting advice on a first bigger kite, choose the 5,6 and now he has to pause for a couple month because his shinbone broke. He had his kite out in way to much wind - 4-5 bft but you know how it is - you have a new kite and its your only advanced one, and then the wind is too high.

He had it at zenith, it liftet him, and dropped him hard.

With oyur weight, please do not over do it.

Toby

Please accept that there is no such thing as single kite to do it all.

The 4.1 will fly and entertian real early . It will lift you in higher winds like the 10 - 15. even IT is going to e TOO MUCH kite for you in 25mph winds . It may be a smaller kite but it deserves HOOJ respect as well.

Sorry...But I have a few more questions. I just came across PL's Hornet series. Would the 5.0 give better jumps than the Twister 4.1? And why is the Hornet series cheaper? Will I get bored of it soon as it is sort of a "Trainer Kite"? Is is also true that I will get lots of air with the 4.1 but with brutal landings?
