Board Practice

OK, a while back a friend told me to practice and learn to jump on and off of the ATB. Get used to it.

Well I've been doing that in the house for some time now and its starting to pay off. I couldn't land in the bindings at first, but now its getting easy.

Time to move on. What else is good practice? Some things that can be done inside that will help me outside in the rough.

Well, anything out or inside that will help while the wind doesn't blow.

Thanks

Thanks dgkid, I have been out with the kite a few times. Had some down winders.

Thinking part of the problem (other than being terrified) was the board won't turn. It has the yellow cubes in the trucks. So I have some new #2 (blue or purple I forget) on the way.

Kite time is tough to get. When I have time and wind I'll get with it. Kind of why I'm looking for at home drills.

Looking for things that will help when I do go with a kite. Like jumping in and out of the bindings. That feels important.

But your right, nothing could be better than just doing it.

Anything else?

I would think just doing it would be the way bro. Thats how I'm doing it so far. (and not doing it well yet lol)

Another thing I do sometimes at home when theres no wind, and mind you I dont know if this is doing me any good or not, is getting in the bindings and just doing "hop 180s" and trying 360 the same way...

Do you have board skills in general? If not, learn how to bomb hills and whatnot, the turning techniques could help, although good luck finding a way to powerslide on pavement with rubber tires:lol:

Mougl, I do hop around a bit. That should come in handy. Didn't know you was working with a board. Makes ya jingles jangle don't it.:lol::lol: How close you coming to a 180 or 360? Try the jumping in and out.

I saw some stuff on utube. They was riding on the front wheels and such but WTH, I got to learn to crawl first. But thats kids for ya. I see older guys ridding very good too.

ikemiester, thought I still had board skills. I run down a grass hill in the yard a few times, busted my butt a few times also. I'll be glad to try the new cubes, think I can rip the grass up with them, just can't turn it now. The toe side turn means to crash. Yea the power sliding thing might have to wait.

IMO sliding is an essential skill ... easiest done in the dirt with a kite though.

I got channel trucks on the Kava which have polymer things you can put in the springs ... I took 'em out cos I couldn't turn either. Again IMO riding with and without a kite are completely different. Feels nothing like snowboarding to me at all ...

Yeah... I got a kite. Or two...

Just hopping on the board (no kite, not moving) I can hop and do the 180 just fine...the 360 is almost there...going boarding/buggin tomorrow though. Finally a day off! Going to have a student there as well so hopefully there will be enough wind to give a kite basics lesson and get another one hooked....oh yeah and do some riding after. If I can tinker a bit tonight maybe ill set up the gopro for some comic relief

with out the kite, board balance skills have to be on.

downhill is different , but alot of balance stuff is all fundamental.

golf cart /atv pull gonna be a little more like a kite ride. get heel side toeside action and some slide stuff.

a swing line with your harness is kinda fun , gives ab strength and timing , near sitting posture with the board on will give some simulation. a big timing help for swing out rotations and balance.

required : tree / high beam

rope

gravity

the more swing the better!

add a simulated bar on the line. it will add to the feel.

set up and posture are tedious to make it just right, totally fun once its dialed

You know I've been thinking about putting a rope in a tree. But it was more for keeping me from hitting the ground so hard. Might have to put something together.

The new cubes came today, got em in right before work but didn't try much. I know it turns way better. I was scared I would smack the ground then have to work with the pain. LOL I'll test them when I get up.

We know this field in Anderson, the wind there is terrible. Like being in a twister. But, there is several paved runs right thru it. Then one big paved circle around the the field. Thought about getting pulled by the car around the place. Sounds crazy but its flat grass and you could ride in the grass or on the pavement. Cool looking place.

Google earth, White Hall Park, Anderson SC in that area.

If I get the rope thing up, I'll vid some hillbilly redneck practice.:lol:

Ok so the rope is in the tree now. I've tried it several times. At 47yrs its gona need to be worked into a bit.

Swinging from a limb by rope and waist harness in 90 degree heat will take it out of ya.

Tried several times to shoot down a 2 foot drop, rope pulls tight and sends me out of control in a circle.:lol:

Once into a large stump and then a pile of concrete stepping stones. Going to move them as soon as I get my strength back.

But it has potential. I've cool off a tad and going back for more.

Yea he slid a bit.

I slide on everything and anything I go across, on my butt tho.

The sudden stops from up above then straight down is what gets me.

I went back out to swing from the tree today. It was going as good as could be expected until my make shift bar broke lose. I'll give it another go when I wake up.

It just seems so retarded. People passing on the road can see. But I can tell it will help.

The board turns pretty good now. The video with the bungee isn't a bad idea. I'd be killed tho. Those guys took some pretty hard falls.

Well, this is what I have so far. Not much but its already helping me keep the board on my feet. Giving me a little confidence on the board also.
But it aint pretty and the camera wasn't out there when I was hitting big air.:lol:

It's a scary, scary thing when the first thing I think of when looking at that is wondering what you could do with a little more space and a vertically suspended bungee.

This way madness lies....

It'll take some more work the Rhododendron I have it tied to is too flexible, I'm not getting enough air.

Uh, huh, huh, huh, like Beavis ,what the hell are doing? Just go out and ride the damn thing . kick it like a skateboard, ride down a hill. When ya do it w/ a kite, ya' gotta lean back and put your feet out in front of ya'. And try to keep the lines tight. That is the funniest damn thing I have seen in a while, I love you guys, you kill me.
The bungee thing is lookin like some good beach fun when there is no wind. But hangin from a tree,is for fruit. just get comfy ridin around on the board and get comfy w/ your kites and jumping if that is what you are gonna do on the board. Then it will all come together. Lean back and trust me
Oh yeah, don't ride in UNTRUSTABLE wind. Or be prepared to bust yo azz.
You gotta remember , it all changes when the kite is in motion. You can't learn that from a tree that is static. You are mostly getting upward pull, w/ a kite you are gonna get that side/ slightly forward pull that converts into foreward motion. Because it is easier to pull you foreward than pull you sideways. Until you get these very basic skilz down ,I would not worry about air. Or it could be a steep learning curve.

It is comical to watch though.

try making a ramp and jumping it, that will teach you how to land w/ the board in motion. the rest is timing. Practice makes perfect.

Hey Willard, That was like my first time also, but man your in the jungle there.:lol:

Special Forces will be trying to get you to join up. I've actually picked up on a few things with this. And as for doing it with a kite, the fields are 25 miles away. I can't just run down and set make a few runs, but here at least I can put some effort in it. Like you the tree is right here.

Weldngod, down hill is good, but the tree is a hoot. I've did some ridding with the kite but not much. Its getting me used to the board. All I need now is a big ramp to get more speed down the hill.

Let me know what you come up with Willard, I'm sure I can make it look more comical than it already does. Thanks for the vid.
