DTY Home Maintenance
Just wanted to say I have finally fixed my fridge after two weeks.
Makes me so happy that I don't have to buy another. Two kites and a board put a squeeze on things and the fridge was already on the brinks?
Guess you have to have your priority's.
We can finally buy food again.
So if ya fridge goes out, ask some questions, don't wait and piddle 2 weeks.
Found out a great weed remedy in the process also.
Well, I have weeds that grow up thru some gravel I put down.
After a 10 buck container of Round-up. 2 bottles of Spectracide, weed killer. I realized those damn things wouldn't going to be easy to stop.
We picked up a cheep Ice Cream maker. 24 bucks at wally.
You'll do things like that when the fridge isn't working right.
Made some Banana Ice Cream,,,,twice,,,, soooooo good.
Sweet thang said poor that salt and water on those weeds.
What? I mean yes dear. Well, it worked like a charm. Dunno if its a good idea for the yard, nothing may ever grow there but for my gravel problem, it
works great.
So I'm very happy today. The fridge is fixed and I can bust some weed a$$ because it went out.
Sorry, but I had to tell someone, We going to make some tea today!!!!! WooooHoooo.

Salt of the earth!!!
So what went on the fridge? most common trouble is the timer. But other things happen too.

Well the bottom inside got warmer. Thought maybe it was so hot in the house maybe I should set it a little cooler. In a few days, the freezer was
getting warm.
Crap,, I immediately pulled the diffuser on the bottom and there was a problem. Dust so thick no air could get thru. Vacuumed it. Waited and no dice,
cleaned it with a long bottle brush and put external fan on the compressor. No dice.
Then one night after work it hit me that I would need to defrost it. Look and the back panel had frost built up. So I unplugged it, took a hair dryer
to it then let it sit over night.
Plugged it back up, the freezer is working great. Bottom got better, then after a couple days the bottom heated up again. and the frost came back.
Must of not defrosted it enough. Unplugged it for the weekend. Plugged it back up worked great for a short while. Then it all started over again.
(still cant put anything back in there until you know you have it fixed)
So by now I can see the problem. The timed defrost cycle isn't working. This morning I started removing things. First I turned the defrost timer with
a screwdriver to see if it would start melting the ice build up. It didn't but the timer kicked the fridge back on after several minutes, so it wasn't
the timer.
Next was to check the heater and the thermostat. Took out the ice maker and removed the back panel. The coils were covered in ice as expected.
From all my skills and knowledge I knew to just stand there and do a complete
visual inspection first.
Found the thermostat, then the heater and started tracing wires. There is was, the heater wire was unplugged.
The dust had prevented proper cooling. Everything turned to a complete ice block behind the rear panel. The ice pulled the wires just enough to pop
the plug loose. The air transfer from the coils to the fridge was blocked with ice.
So, if you don't clean the bottom cooling coils under your fridge from dust buildup often, bad things will happen to your fridge. Such a simple thing
to do and it could have cost me big bucks.

HR, you are the first one on the forum to admit to changing your diet and doing without home appliances for kite purchases. You are to be commended.

It doesn't matter if you have wind or a place to fly you will still shop for kite stuff and pile it in the corner. Everything else can wait.

The only problem with the salt from the ice cream maker is nothing else will grow there either. I think they used to salt a conquered land to make it
desolate. I'm not sure but I think Saddam salted the ground of southern Iraq so the Shiites couldn't grow food.

Figures as much. I wouldn't put in a yard but the gravel project needs it bad. I can't get grass or weeds to grow under the oaks but put some gravel
down and everything wants to sprout right up thru it.

under the oak , a ST. Augustine variety will do well,
fescu does well in the shade. put the water to it!
the salt is better than petrol based herbicides. for your own safety and the run off.
the best ....a hoe , chemical free and good for you too.
sounds like you need underlayment for gravel.
but in my shade tree experience if you want grass to stop growing buy a GOKART!

any hoe I've seen isn't exactly chemical free.,
After Dana and I moved 18 tons of gravel with shovels and wheel barrel, I threw all those types of tools in a far corner. And that was just to park
the boat on and if front of my shop out back.
Gravel under the oak would grow grass, thats for sure. LOL
But I might have to try the grass Phree suggested. If I had the cash and my way, concrete yards would rule!!!
