I did it i did it then i fried my knee

Guys have to share my day- headed to a new flying field i found (3 polo fields and 11 soccer fields) grass as far as the eyes could see and only one group of guys there playing cricket (yeah thats what i thought too) had the whole place to myself wind was normal mountain gusty 10-15 so i was determined to get some good runs on the mountain board, have yet to have any that were of length given my normal flying field and i did it. Was able to get several runs in where was able to fully lean back and have the kite almost in front of me as i tacked across the field - IT WAS AWESOME :wee::wee:. now for the unlucky part- on one of my upwind tacks back up a gust pulled me off the board about a 1' in the air thats all but the followup gust forced me another foot in the air and then came down on my knee sideways:wow::thumbdown:- it took about 5 minutes before i could even try to stand on it and then it wouldnt support me, seems a little better tonight but that could be the advil and percocet. All in all if i can walk tommorrow it was a great day:singing:- oh for those interested in what the kite was that took out the knee a 3.8 reactor- the small ones seem to have the bigger teeth:megan:

Make sure you add a couple beers to that and all will be fine.... If beer and drugs dont work tonight, you will have to add pizza tomorrow....
I know that sound drastic, but sometimes thats what it takes....

(Sounds like a super sweet field)

Glad you got to experience the run. Sorry about your knee.

I hope it gets better with rest but I can already see your too much like myself and will wait forever before going to the doc.
If you can't even walk on it, somethings wrong. IMO... but lets hope not. Maybe its just really sore as your thinking its a little better tonight.

Did you have any knee pads on? Just wondering if they might or might not have helped.

I'm looking forward to a few good runs like that. Think I got the right kites, good board and been working on balance weekly by doing related things. Its not as easy when you get a few years on ya.

I bet it was an awesome feeling. You wait and wait and try and try then one day you do it, I can't wait.

Hope your knee is better tomorrow, and congrats on the run and new fields.

Kneepads are good for direct impacts, but after I twist, torque or just plain "land wrong" ...well, knee and ankle braces are looking more useful. :karate:

i did have some of the safety gear on, but the knee pads did not help , Lad was right i needed some sort of brace. Going to see the doc this afternoon (walking is a major issue this morning).
@WG- you had some type of shin guards you use that i think velcroed on- what are those I have a really nice grass rash on my shin that could have been prevented with those things i think.
Also to everyone else- i am discovering that my falls are harder then when i was younger what other forms of battle armor to you guys use- I usually wear helmet, gloves, elbow/forearm guards, kneepads. It sucks getting old- my mind says yes but my body says no and im only 40

The Thor looks interesting. I think I would still put it in the knee pad category. Knee braces always bring these to mind.

Brace for sticker shock as well as impact. :o Yes, I know pricing is all relative.

Alright here is the good news- appears to be very bad sprain crutches/cane for the next week or two, ice it daily as well as lots of ibuprofen and percocet. After the first week try putting it back to work slowly.

Now after looking over the protective gear- I am afraid that i might scare the children playing soccer if i show up as a storm trooper and then put up a kite:roll:- just visual that if you did not know about power kiting- people would scream freak and every field we fly in would be closed due to the alien invasions. I like those enhanced knee pads but do any of you guys actually wear that body armor for kiting (not saying i wont consider) but i do think my wife will make me reconsider teaching my 10 yr old to kite if I am thinking of wearing battle gear to go fly.

Yep it's saved me quite a few bumps and bruises. Still need to get some knee pads though.

Errr....umm... how "freakish" does some of this gear look?

Pretty sure that there are 10 year olds playing football and running the ATV/MX circuits. Pretty sure there are moms on the sidelines and in the pits too.

As far people pointing and staring at the field... a multitude of sins can be hidden under baggy shorts and 3/4 jerseys... less slippage of gear anyway.

On the other hand.... dare to dream of a world where the local soccer youth are chased off the field by young armored fliers... non-functioning (or functioning :ninja: ) gun turrets on the family van are purely optional.

Sam

the only protection i use are knee pads, crash shorts and a helmet. falling/crashing is not always about what you are wearing for protection, its more about learning to fall properly. 1. never kick your board off if a jump goes wrong, get the wheels down first and let the board take the impact, then fall over if needs be. 2, falling forward, fall onto your knees and use your knee pads to slide on until you are back in control of your kite or pull the safety. 3, falling either left or right, dont be tempted to extend an arm to break your fall as this will most probably lead to further injury. instead use your crash shorts and land on your hip then roll.
i dont crash as much as i used to but using these rules have saved me from serious injury

We'll have to set something up. I'm not real wild about 4hr drives, unless the conditions really warrant it. However, I'm sure we could set something up some weekend. It just will not be something I do very often.

So, keep me posted on when your leg is recovered and we can look at settting something up. I spend a lot of my weekends on the water, but I think I can take a break to do a little buggying, just want to make sure it is something we will get the most out of.
