Spreader Bar Resized

I had to weld a crack in a pressure washer today and afterwards sweet thang said why don't you fix my spreader bar.

She wanted it cut down to six inches.

So I thought I would share the project. Still needs some polishing up. Also how do you guys remove powder coat? Can you burn it off? would be quicker than sanding if so, its thick!

I did pc for awhile, you either grind it off or burn it off and burnoff ovens range from 450-800 degrees, its extremely hard to blast it off, it just wants to soften the coating when trying to sand blast it off,

looks pretty good man

acetone or gasket remover(methylene chloride) might take it off. I know that gasket remover will strip car paint down to the metal.

Is that an aluminum spreader bar? Some of the old windsurf spreaders were aluminum and weren't designed for the stresses of kiting. I only ask because my wife had on that she used to clip a shackle to and it ate away at it. It looked just like that one with the black anodizing.

Check the bottom of this page for the pic:

My wifes never busted, but she wasn't pushing it's limit either. I did hear others say they fell apart on them though.

Hmmmm, it is aluminum. Guess it will be alright for her 125lbs.

But I'll have to keep an eye on it if others wear out. Dunno how one could fall apart tho. Aluminum would certainly give way before steel and wouldn't be a good choice for air time. I'll get her to swing from a tree with it and see if the hook / loop thing gives any.

WG, I have some acetone, will give it a try.

Finished

The acetone was a big help. Took a light layer off with a Dremal tool and then used a wire brush with acetone.

Put a little shine on it and I'm done. Probably 2 hours + in that little thing.

I hope it wasn't 6061 AL, or you just took the temper out of it when you welded on it.

I some how got her to put the harness on and swing from the tree with it. No bends or cracks.

I think its gona be fine for her static flying.
