re: flying tips

Oh, this is an EASY one! Here is my routine to vastly improve flying skills:

1. Wait for sunrise.
2. Start flying.
3. Don't stop.
4. At sundown, attach lights to kite.
5. Don't stop.
6. Continue flying.
7. Only when everyone else is gone home, put kites away, begin step #1.

When I first began to buggy, me and Glen Pedro were first out, last in, EVERY TRIP. More hours=more skill.

Now, I stick my head out of the van, and if the wind ain't PERFECT, I open another brewski. :moon:

Fly boy, Fly!

Pay attention to the wind direction and speed.

Become aware of how your kite handles gusts.

When practicing with small (< 5m) kites, don't fly directly across the window, you'll get into bad habits that will get you hurt with bigger kites.

Remember big kites fly much more slowly than small kites.

Get on any kind of wheels (shopping cart, roller blades, skateboard) or snow (sled, saucer, ice skates) as soon as you can. Having the kite pull you around in or on anything will allow you to begin learning how to stay up-wind, jump, etc. Everything you learn will apply to everything else.

Helmet, elbow, knee pads...:spin:

Fly, fly, fly, have fun.

A brief word(s) from the Coreylama...

A very important aspect of power kiting is the ability to control your kite regardless of your body position or where you're looking.

I call it: KITE CHI

While doing a loop with the kite, raise your arms over your head and spin around, untwisting your lines as the kite is twisting them.
Sounds cool, huh?

It's not about your lines.

We have become so visual in our culture, I think our brains sometimes forget we have other senses.
We are directly, physically connected to the kite through the lines.

Turning your back to the kite, for just a moment, allows your fingers a chance to learn the language of the kite. It'll tell you "Where It Is" and "Where It's Going".
Keep doing this drill (it's not a trick) until it is a comfortable and normal part of flying your kite.

Power Kiting is about where you're going, not where you are.
Looking at the kite while moving is "looking where you were"

The kite and the board or buggy should not be where you focus your attention. That makes one an accident waiting to happen.

Make sense?

Safen Up! Buggy On!

"I'm often wrong, but never in doubt."

hey coreylama,
thanks for the reply this is good advise and i will take it on board i have had people tell me things along the same lines as yours like fly with your eyes closed for a few seconds and feel what the kite is doing so making adjustments become second nature. im hooked on this sport and love flying my kites

thanks again everybody who replyed and keep fun and safe.
