Geocaching
Anybody Geocaching?
I figured having a GPS might as well use it for other things so we went on our first hunt today.
Well she lucked up and found it before I did, now I have to play catch up.
It was cool, just a log book inside. But there were many names on it.
The trackable items called travel bugs are neat also.

I have done it before, pretty fun stuff, maybe 6-8 outings.
I kinda got tired of it, and would just rather hit the 4x4 trails instead, but fun cause you find some ammo can full of goodies in the middle of
nowhere.
Some just have logs, but a bunch is the give and take rull, little things like coins and small treasures.

I logged over 1300 finds...as Akulakat and had over 100 hides. I'll send you a link to some of my hides, people around here complained / and
cheered at how hard they were to find.
But the kids got more into sports and the geocaching stopped. I suppose once they leave the house, we may start back up again.

Been into it for about 7-8 yrs, but haven't had much time this year, only a few finds. It's a great passtime with the kids to get outdoors. there's
a great commnuity of cachers here (where it started). Started out with traditional caches, but started to plant and solve puzzle caches mostly now.
I like the off-line puzzle work followed by a tangible find Next year at NABX,
I'll be planting a temporary event cache. Brought an ammox box last year but never got to put it out.

Yesterday while waiting on the wind we found one. It was an ammo box with a bunch of stuff in it.
Had a Travel Bug that started in Ga. so we are moving it on.
Think we'll start loading some into the GPS each time we go out just to have that extra little something to get into. Actually, she gets pretty
excited about it.

If you are a 'premium' (30$/yr) member to geocaching.com you can download querries from your immediate region or near your local kite spots, or
wherever. Gpx files you can push to the gps. You'll find that you'll likley end up needing the cache pages to. You can dload these and us one of
many programs to convert them to a portable format, or just use your smartphone if you have signal, or get the geocaching app In the olden days before my handspring, before my ipaq, before my iphone, I had a
binder with prints outs :o

Thanks arkay,
If this turns out to be a new hobby, I might have to get hooked up with some of that.
The Garmin Oregon 450t does a lot like you speak of but that thing is 450 bucks.

They should have a paper in there explaining what it is; there's standard text on the website.
I've got the GPS 60csx which doubles as a buggy speedometer, track log, car navi when on vacation, hikeing log, ... nice device. had it for about 5
yrs.
But you can use a cheap etrex or even a iphone is good enuf.
