Are there any land based kite magazines in north America? I'd like to get a landboarding magazine if they exist. I picked up one while I was in England and France this summer and now I'm addicted. I know there's kitesurfing magazines but I'd like a landboarding one

I don't believe so.

PowerKite does allow for international subscribers, but it will run ~$10-11 and issue. Strictly speaking not absolutely horrendous for a niche magazine... an offshore one to boot (some U.S. lapidary magazines run in that neighborhood).

Subscriptions are available directly through the publisher or Amazon.

I would love to be wrong, but that's what I found a year or two ago, and I don't think much has changed. UK/Europe has more kite related (all disciplines) magazines .... period.

we subscribe to PowerKite and its a perfect read. its the only english text magazine since Kite and Friends doesnt want to change their format.

On a prarie full of niche interests and specialized activities, land based kiting is the runt of the gopher litter.

There have been a couple of online magazines (IKITEMAG comes to mind, but I haven't seen an new issue in quite a while). A print magazine would have more overhead, and would require a bit of momentum to keep going.

A magazine would need to have enough subscribers to keep the computers and overhead lights running before they even thought to make a profit.

Sadly, Kiting in all it's flavors is closer to being mainstream in the UK and Europe.

They also do a better job of keep open lands non-designated/multi-use.

start a completely feelance online magazine where people go to events make little write ups and take some pictures and send them into the online mag purely donated time and resources if it is somewhat succesfull any advertising could pay for hosting and other expenses involved. I do not have these skills but I am sure there are people with them. Would be great for kiting lots of exposure.

how about all of us get together and do it! I can tell you from knowing the two folks that run Drift - NA snowkite mag, it's hard. If you are willing to put in the hours it's worth it. Plus, you all know that as of right now there is only one certified/int'l recognized landboarding instructor in the US... how about we get some more folks cert'd and really start pushing it!


ps.. we ran into the same issues a bit ago when trying to create a landboard comp here in the us.... really very little interest.

should try a proof of concept and have people send pictures and small writeups in and try to throw something together this type of thing can only get better as it gets moving. First issue could be posted as a pdf on PKF with permission of course? Ideas for articles could be simple opinions from events even small get togethers with some photos of course. Could also have some user imput on new gear as well as a new to kite section to school me LOL! depending on how fast material comes in would determine when the first issue would be released. That would be awesome. It took me a long time to realize that land based kiting was more of a UK thing. I've been a certified skateboarding instructor since 2004. When I was in college I was riding as a professional for about 3 years doing competitions tradeshows and demos. My buddy just started a Midwestern skateboarding mag called flatespot skateboarding. I can talk to him about how to start a mag (I'm in the first couple of issues, and it's my 4th mag I've been in :D). I'd like to see more freestyle atb in north America to see other riders progressing.

I have a plan. How about a monthly web based magazine that focuses on the results of local events and general issues that effect kite landboarders (land access issues, local flying sites, etc). I don't mind having a profile of a single rider, in each issue, but the moment this magazine becomes an elitest rag showcasing what specific people can do and not what effects the average joe, I'm out (I canceled all my kiteboarding subscriptions because all they talk about is how great so-and-so is).

The second portion of the website will be a place where the average user can post reviews on the equiptment that they use. There could be reviews of new gear as well, but it needs to be focused towards the average user (not the elite rider). Along with the reviews, there can be site reports and condition reports that is specific to a geographical area.

Last but not least, there is a space for an event calender.

When the site goes live, it will be supported by ad placement. Until then, it will just be a work in progress.

I need submissions. If you have something that you want to submit, please do. I need pictures, videos (links to youtube would be best), and reports on local events. U2U me if you are interested.

I really like the idea of the web based mag, (kiteline's idea)that covers all aspects of land based kiting. Having people from all over the country adding stories, info, and tons of pics! I would contribute to that!

In my opinion, I wouldn't bother with the powerkite magazine available in the UK. In fact, I've just heard that they are going quarterly.
