Amsteel - how to measure?
Want to order some here in Japan ... tried to order what I thought was bridle line through my local shop, but instead got much thicker line than I
really wanted - he measured the piece of line I brought in and decided it was 4mm, which I agreed to but the 4mm that arrived is more like 6mm IMHO
... that's cool, I'll use it for other stuff like my Ultimate Depower line (or a double depower) but I'd still like to get the right size without
having to order 10m of 2mm AND 3mm :o
So ... how do you measure Amsteel?
Yeah... I got a kite. Or two...

Amsteel is a U.S. based company so all line diameters are measured in inches. Such as 7/16" or 1/2". All you would need to do is convert it over to
mm.
4mm line would be equivalent to 5/32"

Hey Kami- here in Canada the amsteel is sized in mm but they do have the little conversion chart on the wall beside it for imperial.
I've got several diameters for bar components and bridle line - I've got 2mm, 3mm and 5mm. I use the 5mm for bar trim line, the 3mm is the leader line
on the bar (outer lines) and also pigtails for front line connections and 2mm for bridle mods. or sewn line extensions and connectors.
Now whether what is called out as 5mm here matches 5mm elsewhere - sounds like you are asking for one thing but getting another?
Hope that helps

I mean, is it 4mm diameter or 4mm when skooshed in a pair of calipers or 4mm when eyeballed against a ruler? :D

Ruler or caliper..... no skooshing. The braid/weave on Amsteel is open enough that it will skew your measurement.
If you are absolutely OCD, lightly tape the end with blue painters tape (which you might do anyway if you are hot cutting), and use a bolt
gauge.

If you can do macro photos with your camera and take a photo next to some scale or caliper, maybe I can figure it out and shop for you. Just over an
hour south of here is the country's largest West Marine, where they stock all sizes of Amsteel and are actually knowledgeable.
Know what you mean, though; bought some 3/16 for adding 5th line safety rigs to Neo I's and it sure looks thicker than that.
