$500 was the price of them when they were new. The asking price might seem high, but they are fairly rare now and while they weren't perfect, they were unique and developed a cult following.

A year or two back, someone that had stockpiled them was selling them off at a fair premium. Definitely an example of what the market will bear.

If BMW had had a follow-up or if someone had licensed the suspension and steering setup, leading to a glut/plethora of similar boards, there's no way they would command that kind of asking price.
