Edit* "am i right" to Hmmm. good point

Ok I mean no disrespect to anyone with a video camera out there but I feel I must start an issue with something that has come to my attention. Video clips and music tracks, I know, I know. I realize that we all want to express how we feel when we shot our beloved footage but I think we are better off leaving the sound raw and uncut. If you must you can always lower the volume or clear up the quality. I mean, I myself am guilty of saturating clips with death metal, rock, country, and hip-hop, whatever. Maybe I start a revolution, maybe I don’t. Am I the only one who thinks this way?
Again… Peace, Love, and Kites

Just take this clip I found on you tube as an example of what I am referring to.

I don't necessarily disagree, but on the other hand I found it just as annoying as
death metal. I find the mute button to be the most helpful.

I'd rather hear a non-objectionable piece of music VS wind-noise and splashes, but I find very little music I find non-objectionable in flicks.....

I'm liking this. If you were to happen to do a faceplant, we could hear the actual moaning. You know what you are doing. Good job on both the riding and the movie.

maybe that's why there's music on most of these kite vids--to cover up the "oh @&#% @$!# *@&^#%^ " lol-- ive got music on my "toledo kite buggying" video, but minus the tune, all you would hear is laughing pretty much the whole time......then again, go pro doesnt pick up sound to well......

The soundtrack from today's skiing ... "WSHHHSHSHSHSHHSHS clackity clack Oh crap! OOOF! Bah! HAR HAR HAR! You a snowman!" :D
I like the natural sound too but the Kiteline mount picks up all the noise from the lines slapping and the helmet mount only JUST gets voices ... picks up heavy breathing real nice though :o and some forms of editing render an audio track out of sync etc so you've got the option of either music or an incredibly difficult bit of syncing ...

Random crappy music gets my goat too ... I try and fit it to my mood that day or thoughts or something

Those of you who know me may know that I am of nature. I enjoy all the sounds of nature and though this is human induced sounds I enjoyed it. The water splashing and gurgeling. Mostly when he moved the camera to the board. A great video. And the rain scene was great. But wasn't he worried his kite would get wet?:frog:

Mood: chilled....but ready to SAIL!

[*] posted on 30-12-2010 at 10:11 AM

i personally like the flow of the music and the ride put together . i ride that way esp. on atb. helps with the timing and relaxes me. for the viewer? it translate differently. add in just a fraction of speed adjustments and sounds turns to #@%$#!. wind noise, line noise splash, crack ..i don't really hear it when i ride so it sounds very alien on raw stuff for editing. i quickly learned how hard it is to get nicely framed, shake free, zoom appropriate raw stuff and the big issue esp. on static camera placement there can be alot of empty frame when making passes.. example a 3-sec air make take a 1-2 minutes to setup for position or riding lines into the framing and not counting off frame junk, it gets boring and viewer losses interest . the on board POV stuff is good example uncut stuff that comes out decent. some rides esp. on the water are just long point of sails for 10min. to hold good upwind position kinda boring . having a person helping with well framed and action zoom really dolls even mediocre stuff.

the speed element doesn't translate that well and takes a lot time (per run), speed and space, which all factor into framing, focus, zoom , blah blah,blah,.. for freestyle flowing from trick to trick really takes space and distance and it all falls into problems like too far away, off frame and all the issues mentioned above.

so editing and clip adjustments REALLY take the empty frames ie. "let me set up for another pass" 50 sec later you come back around into the frame.

the vid you posted has editing and clips for good viewer interest. nicely done , reasonable skills and GO PRO make for the best DIY with or without music with very little effort.

the really cool freestyle vids leave OUT the rudimentary skills for positioning and good set up for tricks which unfortunately has to be mastered before throwing good freestyle. some basic riding stuff is definitely needed for better understanding of how it all comes together.

the tunes though... come on.. i play most vids NO SOUND and my own music is always playing on my CPU in the background. music taste is broad and can add to projects, even if its just feedback that the video is actually playing when the lame factor has arrived.

and ATTITUDE is everything... YOUR tunes just conveys it.

i think thats the beauty of editing. you're never going to please everyone that watches it. its fun to edit too but takes a lot of time.

I have to agree sometimes it better to cut / reduce the music background to capture voice or whatever. im not a fan of the board clapping landings. hands down the worst is watching one static fly and listening to soft music = BORING.

for music we all have our own tastes, and i probably bet my music doesn't agree with most.

no matter the music i would watch those POV buggy videos forever. damn you all that live in sunny country and have extra long beaches. :P

+1 for music- I dig sinking the song and the edit. However good bails need good sound FX, including the natural splattering noises. Room for both, IMHO.

I'd be all for the naked track IFF it wasn't crap :) If someone can find a good unidirectional mic for a gopro... i get bibration sonuds from the buggy tube and line drag noise. I think there's beauty in a track well edited into the video. I just haven't seen that many people be able to do it :)

Here's a simple track that goes really well with the video. In fact it goes so well, that I once tried to watch it at work with the sound off but I turned it back up! 264 Miles To Grayland - http://vimeo.com/14939587

I want a spare case for the GoPro to try isolating the camera from the case ... it'd need some carving out to do it though, which is why I haven't bothered yet :D

I like music in the vids to help set the vibe and put some emotion in the video. I don't care to just hear the wind whooshing by the mic or a coat slapping a microphone.

I've commented in the past that I DON'T like music with heavy profanity. One of the main reasons my kids haven't seen any of CTBs videos. But I don't care if its mellow or fast or hardcore or rap but I do think it would be fun to see the same video with two musical genres and let the viewers decide how each musical rendition altered their feeling and viewing of the video and add that to the discussion.
