In the video the ice looks incredibly smooth, is that usual for Alberta lakes? Where I grew up (PQ) the frozen lakes alway had a pebbly surface that was just brutal to skate on. If you tried kite winging on them, you would shake the fillings out of your teeth.
S
p.s. Your video of Rattlesnake Res. (last years) the ice looks more like what I am familiar with, not that incredible clear ice of 40mile.

Is it possible to design for strength, if the designer doesn't really understand what strength is?

In Alberta you never know what you are going to get for conditions. Last year we didn't have a single smooth ice day in southern alberta, this year the smooth ice didn't last and we now have more snow than has been seen in 10 years. This past Sunday and Monday it was -32C in the morning, - 25 in the afternoon. Today it was +8C. They are calling for a possibility of rain for tonight with a major dump of snow after that. It's a wacky weather year.

Nice Ice you have there. So where are you hiding the Zamboni?

Might have to try sailing the bumpy snow ice we have here with the wing and nordic skates.
Finicky ice boaters here hate it when anyone throws up a kite. Ice plate is only 1/2 mile x 1/4 mile and their race coarse takes up half the area. They've been sailing this river for over 100 years and it's 100 of them vs. 2 or 3 kiters.
So the Kitewing is fine without stirring the pot.

What kind of skates are you using?

If the ice is rough I use Nordic Skates, but when it is smooth I use these short track speed skates, nice support and very fast.
