i have read a few times that when you send money as a gift via paypal, there is no fee... i have been charged a fee everytime i try this.... am i doing something wrong or have i been misinformed...? :puzzled:

You need to have your paypal account tied to a bank account instead of paying through a credit card. Then it is free to both the payer and payee when you gift.

That not entirely true. If you have a paypal account as a "Business" account you can not pay as a gift. I have one and had to create a separate account to use as a home account just for that reason?

The other thing is, if you're buying goods you have no protection (apparently) so only use it to pay for stuff off people you trust

Maybe the business owners I'm aware of aren't set up as "business" accounts. I know of several that pass money back and forth through gifting. I have no trouble gifting "to" business accounts. Nothing like the free flow of knowledge and ideas though.

Just made a couple of payments from Canada to the US, it would have been completely free from bank account, but fees kicked in once the transaction crossed the border. In other words, it would have been free if sender and recipient were both in Canada.

Funny...I just went through this with PayPal just before Xmas. They called after I sent a payment as a "gift" to PNWFlyer. She said they were just checking to see if it was a legit transaction or if someone had hacked my account. I thanked them for calling and explained it and they got all snitty with PNWFlyer over it accusing him of forcing me to send the $$ as a gift. When I told PayPal I sent it as a gift so I could absorb the fees she said, "there are no fees".

But there were. She said there shouldn't have been blah blah blah. Anyway, ironically I received a "Please take a moment" survey from PayPal after learning they were getting on PNW's case. In every field where I could put comments I wrote "Contact me immediately regarding this" and all my contact info. I think there were about 6 places I could put it.

No contact.

I think you can send it "Money Owed" and avoid the legitimacy of the gift or not (although the kite I bought became a gift to a friend....)
