I need to repair a small tear (4 inches)in my kite - does anybody have any decent solutions, or any revolutionary tactics on mending tears???

Actually, ripstop repair tape is a pretty lousy way to mend.
First, the material of your kite is translucent.
ANY colored tape will show as a large dark patch.
Drawing your eye to the repair.
Second, ripstop tape has a lousy adhesive.
Go to an auto supply shop and look for 3M Plastic tape.
Color: Clear. Try to find the 1.5 inch wide roll.
Used to repair vinyl upholstery in cars.
Trim the edges and on a flat, hard surface, apply the tape over the tear.
Rub it on solidly with the back of a spoon.
The 3M tape doesn't harden, crack or turn yellow.
A superior adhesive has kept it functioning for lo these 15 years now.
But don't listen to me...
