Night Out & Back.

Hi Guys,

More of a prep thread rather than a challenge.

Last year myself, will & dave did the out and back at night. It was the night the wind came through when we were all in tent enjoying selves and really wanted to ride! We then thought about doing the challenge.

The next bit is not us being #@%$#!y/bug headed but more as a warning.

The out & back is tough during the day as the wind varies in direction that far out in lake & time it takes. At night it was tough!

Now we really did plan it out and have buggied at night before, while buggies didnt have lights on we had head lamps if needed plus we took 2 spare kites & lots of drink. The one thing we didn't plan well enough was the temp! It got cold! very cold!

At points we didnt think we would make it, but having the nimble freestyle buggies and have good control meant we could work way through small parts. Was hard to see main routes through in utter pitch black.

The wind switched 3 times while out there to the point it was 180 degrees what it was when we started!

It took almost 3 1/2 hours getting back at 2am. We did it on 4.0ms but had 8.5's also. At one point DEEP out there, the wind died!! We sat for 15 mins with no wind what so ever and kite would not go up at all!

Now I know a few people said they were going to try it this year from last year. If you do, prepare for it, don't just do it on spare of moment. Let several people know and take several phones in case something goes tits up.

Its something we just do, is spontaneous things, but unless you are really competent I wouldn't recommend doing it!

The only bonus is Buff Bills being 24hours!!!!! So when we rocked in at 2am all suited & booted we could get food :D

Laters

Craig

Did you have a path set on gps or did you just navigate to the destination? Lots to go wrong out there in the dark. Don't want to end up in "The Racetrack".

I remeber that night. A kitesurfing buddy and I did the out n back tandem that night. We saw you guys pass by us about 100 meters on the other side of some bushes. Thank god we had a somewhat of a fullmoon, otherwise getting through the endless bush on the dry lake is impossible.

We thought we were going to have to walk all the way back from the other side of the evaporation pond. It would have been a 3 mile walk back to camp. So your are right about being prepared and letting people in your party know about you leaving. Lots of water and a light snack are a must. Remember, you never know when the wind will die out. So be prepared to walk back to camp.

Unless you've already done it, i don't recommend anyone try this again this year.

I can't say more or give away what promises to be the best event of the year.

Also would remind everyone that many people read this forum.
