Playa report

Just wondering, have any locals been to the playa lately? We've been getting a lot of precipitation up here in Reno. How is, or has the weather been down Ivanpah way?

We received a bunch of rain a couple months ago and the dry lake was wet for a while. The way it dried caused the surface to become very bumpy. The conditions there are not what we are used to. We did receive some rain the past couple days. Hopefully just enought to smooth it back out. But not enough to worry about losing it for NABX...that is unless it rains again.

Still laughing at this subject, thanks for the chuckle.

We use the Styrofoam packing peanuts, and told the grandkids they are weather worms, if they are wet-raining, covered with snow-snowing, dry-sunny, gone-windy. hahahahaha

Hey Sailors,
Enough with the jokes... Here's the serious facts:
The lake bed was wonderfully dry and smooth on Sunday.
The main parts have laid down beautifully, with almost no "corn flakes".
Baby Butt Bay (south end - behind the evap pond) is the smoothest it's been in years.
Winds were up in the 15-25 mph range.
Pretty sweet riding.

Today has a 30% chance of precip but temps are back in the mid-70's by Wednesday.

I love bad weather before an event - Bad weather never lasts.
I hate good weather before an event - Good weather never lasts.

That's good to hear. I was worried about the surface. Does the surface texture change even without it getting rained on? Or does it just follow a progression till its locked in place?

I bet you guys see a lot of interesting changes in the surface. I've been on some lakes that were like polished marble in places, then some with tiny craters, the corn flake surface, the frosted cake with all the little pointy bits, the small chunks laying around, the rutted bits.

That's a great update on conditions - fingers crossed over the next few weeks but we'll take what we get.

This is true... we can pitch the 19 and 15 on some short lines to make a big auto-zenith sun shade! I'm almost curious to see what the 19 would do in 12-15 on the lake bed. Note, almost. I have a feeling the 13 would actually go much better

I flew my 15m Phantom and apparent wind made it too much. I can't imagine a situation where an 18 or 19m arc would be appropriate on the lakebed. Winds low enough wouldn't fill it nor launch it. You might be ok if you used a leaf blower, then ran like a mad dog to launch it, and somehow got moving without luffing the kite. There might be that day that 4-5 mph is blowing consistently across the lakebed and you aren't overpowered once moving. Any vets ever fly the biggest of arcs on the playa?

I had the same experience when I had a 15 phantom. Huge pull, but not much speed. Might be good for a tandem setup. I've never brought my 19 to the dry lake bed, just wouldn't be useful.

I agree with Bob and Steve,
If there is enough wind to inflate and fly then you don't need much. For twinskins we had been only bringing from 6 up to a 12 or 13 and then if it was really light wind I bring a large FB foil. There are times a 15/16 would be okay but it's usually a short time before wind builds or late day before it drops off and then it's the more like Steve mentioned with the power/speed.

I always live by the saying, "If you leave it you'll need it". I have flown my 19m charger out there on the playa. But as Beamer Bob said it will only be good on the very light wind days. Personally I would rather fly a huge bridled foil on the light wind days. Just depends on what your used to. But remember to practice good kite control. Control your speed by reaching up wind to slow down with the kite LOW to the ground.
