pissing off the fisherman OBX

debated putting this under access, bans and legal issues... one of the riders from here is part of the Best team and doing some filming and photoshoot in Hatteras right now and posted this video and comment on the forum here.

"Down in Hatteras shooting with Best kiteboarding and Adam Koch right now and getting ready for the Triple S next week.
We found an Epic spot to shoot but had abit of a problem when a drunken fisher man came by. Check it out.
Watch as everyone bails out on me while I'm laced up in my boots of a getto roof"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfdSMdapmiQ&feature=playe...

The guys have been giving him flak for thinking it was all cool and fun to trespass and thanking Best for doing their best to promote good relations

Yep, drunk or not, they should be glad the fisherman didn't come armed with a boat paddle or something really effective for trespassers.:wow:

not really the same as what I did. I was on a nearly desolate beach, they were on someone's personal property. I was "geurrilla kiting " on "public land" that I pay tax dollars like everyone else to use. So ,I don't feel even slightly guilty about what I did. They should.

No, that was obviously a case of direct trespassing right there. To not get any permission before accessing that property is completely retarded. Launching and flying a kite in a public beach, that is not otherwise posted is what normal people would deem to be okay.

Worse than simply trespassing, their actions showed a complete disregard for other people's property, something we see entirely too much now a days IMO. One of the nicest things I've run into since moving to the Banks is how polite almost all the locals are, especially in the smaller towns. This kind of behavior will do them no good here.

OMG that so reminds me of the kids in the back yard , the more there are of them the dumber the stunts! There is a mathematical formula that states , young men ,when brought together begin to function at the square root of there combined ages. That is a perfect example of a proven theory.

Been trying to keep out of this thread due to it having a fairly high potentional for turning into a "horse beating session"

Quote:

Yes, I did wonder. I also thought it displayed more than a little bit of questionable judgement to fling it like that, but I guess brain cells are leading the way when you have been caught doing something wrong and your primary motivation is to "beat feet" out of the area.

Just to be clear, no ire intended in your direction, but I am more than a bit reluctant to give them any due(s) of any kind.

"Down in Hatteras shooting with Best kiteboarding and Adam Koch right now and getting ready for the Triple S next week. Drunk fisherman? He didn't sound particularly drunk to me... he sounded spitting mad and rightfully so. To insinuate they he was inebriated as if somehow that color the situtation more in one's favor or that the fisherman was being unreasonable as a result of that is just gutless and weak.

Getto roof? Spelling?!? WTF? It looked like a fishing shack... the last time I checked there wasn't a whole lot of requirements for fishing shacks to be at the forefront of home decor or feng shui. Just another lame example of trying to play it like right or wrong, the line that divides it, and where you stand is a class perogative.

They didn't sound particular apologetic. They sounded like they were putting out whatever words they needed to, in whatever order was required to get them out of the situation with as little grief as possible.

There were no apologies or signs of remorse in the comments on the Youtube page for the video. The video was posted in the "Comedy" section, just so everyone else could have a good laugh at the "eccentric" behaviour of the local yokel.

Since it hasn't been mentioned already, It's illegal to film on someone else's property much less take the results and post it to Youtube. Doubly so when you are on their property illegally and haven't asked for filming rights.

My whole problem with the forgiveness/permission proposition is when the fecal matter makes contact with the rotary oscillator, the tried and true spin map for the news media is:
  • Traction kiting is inherently dangerous.
  • Actions were conducted in questionable conditions.
  • They were on the property illegally.

In combintation it makes everyone in the sport look like mindless, deathwish totin' miscreants with a blatant disregard for the general public. Last I checked, that wasn't the case, but the news media can wield a broad and sloppy paint brush just as well as anyone.

In the best of all possible worlds:
  • Written apologies would have been tendered (maybe that's just too dated in the era of videophones and texting, but that's exactly why I think that it actually means a bit more and shows some class).

  • The harbor master would have impounded the kite with a fee to get it back and a fine for creating a water hazard (I expect all kinds of fun could have ensued if the lines or kite had fouled some boater's prop).

  • Punitive damages paid to the fisherman in the amount of $1 for every hit count of the video on Youtube.

OK.... I'm done... sorry for whaling on the subject so heavily with the soapbox.

If not already painfully clear, I have a really short fuse on certain topics and a less than forgiving attitude wrt certain types of actions.... hence the original reticence about posting to this thread.

ATB,
Sam

@tridude - Not sure I'm following you, are you saying that video is bad press for the OBX? I didn't get that reaction when I watched it. My reaction was more in line with the majority here, that it was bad press for Best and their crew.

When I heard that Best was moving to the OBX I had a funny feeling it might have ended up being bad for the neighborhood. Looks like my worst suspicions were warranted.
