Port Aransas / Mustang Island
I'm heading down to Port Aransas / Mustang island / wildcat park this weekend. Looks like SE winds 20-25 mph. Anyone going down there or from the
area? heading down for my 20 year high school reunion so figure I bring my kites and boards.

I'll be in CC tomorrow as well. I'm thinking about North Beach, but might hit WildCat..I dunno. I'll decide when I get there. I'll post here once I
figure it out, or if you beat me to the spot, post up
If the forecast holds, I'll be on a yellow and black Nemesis HP 10m, or a blue and black Nemesis HP 9m.

I ended up around the #2 entrance on mustang island. When I got back to Rockport, there was 3 locals kiting the ski basin. There's not much room
there to kite. You pretty much have about 500 feet of space to zig zag back and forth. Today, there was one guy kiting on the beach itself. The
wind was up there in the high 20's so no one was on the beach. Rockport beach is perfect for kiting since it's only about 2 feet deep along the
entire beach that goes out about 500 feet. So on a day with onshore wind and no swimmers, you can kite up and down the entire stretch of beach in
smooth waters ( bay beach , so no waves)

I ended up at North Beach and rigged at the Beach Ave spot. Winds were strong all day. I was lit on my 10m and boosting huge was effortless. The
chop was kind of a pain, tho..
Yeah I've ridden in the Ski Basin at Rockport. My kite buddies and I dig it cuz it's nice and buttery in there, but the butter lane gets crowded with
3 or more.
Also, on the way to my buddy's house after my NB session, I saw a guy riding in the CC marina. It's nice and flat in there, but a major screwup could
land you in some boats, up against the concrete wall, or in the street! Supposedly there's a buncha gnarlies under the water, too- the dude was
weaving through some white pipes. The white pipes I'm used to seeing at Packery Channel denote oyster beds underneath the water... I'm assuming they
mean the same thing in there?

That was the one thing I was worry about the ski basin. It's kinda close to the highway and beach streets. My skills are still at the beginner level
so I am always worry about kiting to close to objects and hard surfaces .
I would worry about kiting anywhere that has any kind of markers in the water. If it's not oysters, it's a sunken boat or something you need to
avoid.
I can't ride waves yet so got knock off my board a few times out in the surf but I sure love my new Door. It's a great beginner board. So easy to
plane.

Riding in chop/heavy chop near the shoreline will help prepare you for the waves. You'll get used to reading the chop-waves as they come in and know
whether you can make it over easy, chicken-turn, ride down the 'line' a little and go over the 'shoulder', or slow down and let it engulf you, pass,
then keep riding out. For me, North Beach was a excellent practice for riding waves in the gulf.
You might want to try a board with some rocker when riding chop/waves. It really helps smooth out your ride, and lets you cut through the chop
easier. I was on my Cabrinha Custom 136 and having tons of fun all day Saturday. I don't have the fins on (for fun), but I still get plenty of
traction and was going upwind easily. Just fyi, ProKiteSurf only has 2010 Custom 140s left and they have them on sale for $239 :o
