Pretty much covered here:

First Kite

What kites have you flown in the past?

Kites have changed a bit in the last 5 years in terms of safeties, smoothness of power delivery, efficiency, and to some degree build quality (materials and production methods).

Initially you might have some problems with line tangle, but once you get used to packing and packing a kite, that should diminish.

For the most part fixed bridle kites turned faster on handles (two handles/4 lines) than on a control bar. There are exceptions (cross-over control bars).... but that will add to the initial cost.

Before reading the thread about "First Kite" think about the above statement....carefully. If you get a kite that is capable of "lifting you off the floor in the air quite alot"...intentionally, it can also lift you unintentionally (if your control skills are incomplete). At that point, you could easily be 15-25+ feet in the air with less than graceful/safe options of returning to terra firma.

i agree with indigo. learn to fly kites then start doing the more fun stuff. you have to learn to fly a kite before you learn to jump. i recommend ozone imp quattros a large one will lift you in higher wind but in lower wind you can learn to fly it. ozone flows are also good a 2 meter can lift me off the ground i weigh about 65 kgs. in 25 mph winds.

go fly a kite trainer 1.4 m
thunderfoil 9 ft.
Flexi sting 1.7m
Ozone flow 2.0 m
PL Vapor 3.2 m
Ozone Flow 5 m
PLVapor 6.5 m
frenzy 14.0 m

I am recovering from a fall from about 10 feet with my blade. Had I not had the practice from my beamer for a month prior to trying this monster, my injury could have been fatal. Get yourself something less lethal for your first kite.

i started with a rush 300 3m kite. it pulls REALLY hard when you have like 10 mph wind and still hard in lower winds. i HIGHLY recommend this kite as a beginner kite. ive had a ton of fun with it and you learn easily. if you time the pull right, this kite has lifted me about 5 to six feet off the ground. and thats good air for a nine foot wide kite and i weigh 170 lbs. just stay away from field goals. my buddy flew it for the second time...dragged him 200 feet down the field, forgot it had the safety strap and held on the whole time and ended up on his stomach and the lines were snapped from hitting the field goal post....still hasnt paid me back for that now that i think of it:lol:

by the way that kite is only like 160 dollars....and the rush pro 350 isnt much more and would prbably be your best bet as it has a brake line that allows you to launch after crashing upside down, which you cant do without the line....and you would have to do the walk of shame:bouncing:
