High Wind Kite

Any reputable kites for high winds? High winds as in 18-30 mph

3m?
4m?

I want to use it for static and boarding. Jumping would be great too.

Any input is appreciated.

I want to purchase an Ozone. As far as i have heard, they are very high quality performance and material. So if any of you want to let me know about some Ozone kites. Please feel free. Im thinking the method.

Thanks,
Chris

P.S. Kind of off topic, but is there any company that makes strops? Or is it strictly make your own? Thanks again

What do you consider high wind? If my 3.5m Ozone Cult is too much to handle, then that's what I call high wind

Yeah... I got a kite. Or two...

Just static flying and depending on how strong and long the gusts were, I'd be deciding whether to put up the 3m and get something out more like a 2. something size. Big kites in big wind flying static becomes work. Put me in the buggy and its 3m to 3.5m time.

18 - 30 is a big range to cover for a fixed bridle kite. I would say 18 - 25 and 25+ would be two different kites

the method is a good buggy kite but it is no fun for static flying because it is a slow turner. More info on what type of kite you are looking for will help. buggy, board, jumping, static , etc

flexifoil sales stropes for their prolink handles. Peter lynn pro handles come with stropes built on and same with ozone handles they are built in.

Ozone also sells a strop a seperate item.

Angus has a nice workaround for using Flexifoil Pro-Link strops on non-Pro-Link handles.

There are West Marine stores in both Braintree and Dedham where you can buy Amsteel or similar and make your own.

This is worth reading as there are several applicable threads that are referenced in it: Where to get a strop?

I still would not recommend jumping with any three meter kite, It may lift you in 25 mph winds, but still won't let you down easy!

Adam is right, if you want to jump in the higher winds, go PL twinskins! Nice float, works great with boards!

I run my Method's on the turbo bar and they are very zippy turners - I think most of Ozone's fb kites need a fair bit of brake input when turning, hence why they work so well on the turbo bar. Static flew the 3m Method for the first time the other day and it was fast and sweet, an absolute joy to fly. Nothing slow about it whatsoever. The 6.5m is a tad slow, but I can still just about pivot it on a wingtip.

When folks around here are moving to their 3m kites my 15m arcs are just coming alive. I don't like holding on to it ( or a3m FB ) in 30mph wind though. For that I suggest a 12m.

What I am still always amazed at is how much safer I feel under an arc than any FB in strong winds.

Unless you plan on sticking with just buggy and static flying then it may be time to think depower ? Only way to match that wide a wind range with 1 kite !

So many choices. Sorry if I'm adding confusion.

If you are still learning, it is probably best to error on the side of caution. A 3m kite is probably good, though going slightly smaller wouldn't hurt anything (while going bigger on a fixed-bridle will probably hurt). I've flown the 2m Ozone Flow in 30+ mph winds before. Was just fine.

Aren't your Stylus, Rush and Rush Pro all in the 3m range? If so, that's a lot of overlap. And if so you may want to consider something very radical like selling them all and maybe even your viper and then getting a 6m access or a 6m yeti (more lift) to use as your moderate to high wind kite and then keep your twister for lower winds. That's a lot of selling but you could raise a few hundred dollars and upgrade to one kite for a wider range for lesser expense then just adding another kite in the 3-4 range (which aren't great for jumping because they lack the float of a bigger kite).

Just something to think about. I'm a conservative flier and when the winds are above 20 I'm not much about jumping so I love my 4m access which I can ride and powerslide around with all day long with no fear of injury or lofting. Loving the yeti too but I can't ride that up to 30 mph (I weigh 150).

Actually, for 18-30, the Access 4m XT would be ideal. And it's zippy enough to static fly as well. Maybe the 3m Apex III would be similar ?

Here's some footage of static flying the 4m XT...

+1 for a 6m access. Lift isn't its primary design, but in 25mph+ it has plenty. Very zippy kite, but predictable and stable.

While this is true it is a bit subjective ?

At 12mph you will be flying the heck out of it to keep moving. At 35+ you will need skills + the right location. Both are Do-able!

so let's say I'm already covered on low wind/midrange foil 13m/9m. Could I supplant one charger to cover the remainder? up to say, 30mph and change? ? I'm not so full of myself I'd go out in anything higher.

It would mostly be for higher wind 17+ snowkiting, but I wouldn't mind some overlap in the sweet spot 14-20.
Will an arc provide enough traction in some pow? and what size would you recommend?
looking through the internets my first impression was 14-15m

Arc looks like an exciting way to fly. I'd be interested in hearing some more impressions.

The sweet spot for my 15m is about 15 - 24mph only because I am a slightly timid flyer. Flyjump amd Rip would say it is higher.

The 10 will take you into some extremely high winds but I prefer as much canopy as possible when jumping. This is why I think the 12 or 13m may be good for your needs?
